Little is known about the first African American hero of the New World. He is believed to have been born into slavery around the year 1723. Attucks has been described as a huge man "whose looks was (sic) enough to terrify any person(Lester)." He was the Massachusetts-born son of an African slave and a Natick Indian(Tellez). At the age of 27, he escaped slavery events that ultimately led to the American Revolution. He was shot by British soldiers during the Boston Massacre on March 5, 1770.

The Customs House of Boston, located on King street, was the setting for an event that helped to fuel the American Revolution. On the evening of March 5, the outside of the Customs House was being guarded by a lone sentry, Private Hugh White. A group of disgruntled citizens, led by Crispus Attucks, gathered outside of the Customs House. The citizens were up to their usual sport of tormenting the British soldiers who were stationed in the city. The British soldiers were stationed there to keep peace, but the townspeople resented the English army being in their city. Fights between the two sides were common. The British soldier standing outside the Customs House was their next target. The massacre began when a young apprentice yelled an insult at Private White. The private struck the apprentice on the ear with the butt of his rifle. The boy yelled for help and more people joined the crowd. At a nearby church, the bells were rung. These bells were normally rung only when there was a fire in the city. This drove more people into the streets. The British sentry was now confronted with an angry mob. He stood his ground and did not panic as he called for more men. His backup was led by Captain John Preston. The angry mob h. A se crowd and was followed by more musket fire. As a result, five colonist were dead or dying and six more suffered nonfatal injuries. It is not known whether or not Captain Preston ordered the soldiers to fire or whether the British soldiers were provoked to attack(Kelly).

With at least a dozen men behind him, Attucks confronted the soldiers by striking their muskets with his stick. When the British captain stepped forward, Attucks swung his club at the officer's head. In warding off the blow, Preston bumped into one of his soldiers, causing him to drop his weapon.

Instantly Attucks seized the musket. The soldier grabbed the the gun, and the two struggled for control. In wrestling the gun from Attucks, the soldier stumbled and fell. Crispus Attucks is remembered as the victim of a brutal attack by British soldiers. He was marked as a hero and is still remonored the patriots who died during the Boston Massacre with the Crispus Attucks Monument. The inscription on the monument reads, "On that night, the foundation of American independence was laid (Lester)." Attucks is strongly remembered today. Jeremiah Holmes wrote: "He (Crispus Attucks) was the first martyr of the American Revolution, which, to me, makes him the founding father of Black America."

Crispus Attucks is a patriot and a hero. He was probaought and died for his nation. He stood up to the domineering British redcoats, but this cost him his life. The irony of his heroic actions is that he would not have been able to enjoy the rights of independent Americans because he was black (Lanning). Knowing this, he still risked his life for the good of his country. He knew what the Americans were going through in their struggle with the Britain.
