In this scene from Amelie Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel use camera distance, angle and movement as well as the frame composition and mise en scene to strengthen the meaning of the story. Amelie, a shy, introverted girl, becomes the fairy godmother to unknowing inhabitants of Paris making each of there lives more fulfilling. Throughout the course of her meddling she encounters Niko, an old grade school classmate. However it is not until the end of the movie that she reveals herself to him and of course they fall madly in live. In this scene the two lovers are riding on a moped down the streets of Paris.

Throughout the film the frame composition has focused on the details of the background to the vibrancy of the color palette. However with the actors in the foreground of the shot they now are the focal point of the action. Also the use of close ups shows the expressions of the actors more clearly which gives the audience a more intimate view of the relationship of these two people.

This shot is extremely realistic compared to the Expressionistic techniques used throughout the film. With the use of handheld cameras and documentary film stock the audience feels as if they are witnessing first hand the compainship and love these two recluses who have found after yeaqrs of lonileness. The use of camera angles at mid range also contributes to the realism of the shot. It seems to represent that Amelie has transcended her make believe world and her fairytale dreams have now become the perfect, romantic ending.

Heartbreak Term Paper

Heartbreak Term Paper

Bullying is a major problem that has many negative effects on the well-being of students and on their right to learn in a safe environment. Bullies, have a tendency to degrade others either by forms of name calling, teasing, threatening, hitting, or stealing. Bullying can also have negative lifelong consequences, both for students who bully and for their victims. The victims will sometimes result to suicidal thoughts and attempts as well as showing signs of psychosomatic conditions like headaches and stomachaches. These victims become so stressed that their motivation to learn plummets with their self esteem. Bullies also suffer from consequences as well. They will probably engage in delinquent activities and grow up to be criminals.

We can write a term paper on Heartbreak for you!

Sometimes bullying arises from factors such as child abuse, violence in the home, and poverty. Most of these bullies seem to possess a tormented soul due to neglect and feel the need to result to violence as a result of these negative influences they have received from others as they were growing up. Some people blame it on the parent's and their responsibility to make sure that their children are disciplined. Obviously that is not always the case.

Verbal Harassment and isolation are the most common forms of bullying amongst girls and boys but more common in girls. These are bullying weapons girls apply when they show relational aggression because it is a highly influential method of convincing others that they possess the power by making the targeted individual feel inferior by isolating them. Girls are much more verbally aggressive than boys. Boys on the other hand are more physically aggressive. Boys generally use force or threat by punching, kicking, and causing the victim to feel pain. These put-downs can be very effective in making a young child who is naive and clueless about the world feel terrible about themselves. Being accepted at school is very important to a naive and young child.

I was never really bullied as a young child, nor was I ever fully accepted. When boys hit me, I would hit them back as hard as I could so I guess that's why they backed off. The "popular" girls were always nice to me so I was nice to them. I remember my brother being bullied. It was this Hispanic boy named Cesar, who had a glass eye. This was when we were in elementary. My brother and I were waiting for our mother to pick us up in the grassy area. Cesar and his posse passed by us and called my brother "Chinky Choi Boy go back to China." My brother was a scrawny little kid back then and since I'm his older sister I've always looked out for him. Well anyways, the next day after school Cesar came up to us and started making fun of my brother again and I told him to stop. I used to be a chubby little elementary kid, and he had the nerve to tell me to "shut up, you big fat pig!" Moments later me and Cesar were hitting, punching, and slapping each other until the teachers pulled us apart. We were sent to the principal's office, and Cesar was suspended from school for a few days. The faculty took pity on me and my brother because we were new, I was a girl and Cesar was known to be a bully. Cesar never bothered me and my brother ever again. To this day I still look out for my brother, even though I'm 22 and my brother is 20 and he is fully capable of looking after himself. My brother does not suffer from any of the effects mentioned earlier. He actually models on the side and goes to school full time. I always thought being bullied was a part of growing up. I've never experienced or witnessed its severity, only read or heard about them in the news and text books.

As I read further into the bullying website, my thought on bullying being a party of life is a myth. There is no method to stop these young bullies. They will continue to torment others until someone, like parents and teachers, convinces them otherwise. If someone notices a bully in his/ her school, they should immediately inform a teacher, principal, guidance counselor, or anyone else that might be able to offer some help. Adults need to be aware of what behavior is unacceptable and use non physical punishment if they cross the line. If these tormented children are not helped, then later on they might try to do something drastic. They will try to become bullies themselves, and in turn, put the lives of other children at risk.

Overpaid Athletes Research Paper

Overpaid Athletes Research Paper

Sports are part of every culture whether it may be in a large or tiny manner and can produce a great source of income. Let us take the United States as the primary example for this very important argument, since sports are one of the most celebrated events in American culture. In this country is where almost the best sports leagues are located, and here you can find some of the most talented athletes in the world. These role models are blessed with the gift of sport and have every right to demonstrate that talent to the rest of the world. The problem with this multimillion industry is that these athletes get salaries that are totally selfish. What this means is that it is incorrect for an athlete to receive outrageous amounts of money when there is so much suffering in the rest of the world.

We can write a research paper on Overpaid Athletes for you!

Out of the major sports in America three stand out in overpaying their players. The league that takes the very first place is the Major League of Baseball. Most of the baseball players receive above million dollars for season, even those that are not on the starting timetable. The second highest paid players are basketball players of the National Basketball Association know for many as the NBA. Though the league does not have a lot of players due to the fact that on a team there are around 11 or 13 players the most, but nevertheless they are still overpaid. The third place on this list belongs to the National Football League, who has great amount of players, around 70 on every team. Most of the players receive close to the million range.

I truly admire these talented athletes, for example, for me it's very exciting to see Michael Jordan perform, he is a great role model for teens but nevertheless he was strongly overpaid during his basketball years. On his last season before he retired for the second time, he received 30 million dollars. My question is how can society progress if millions of dollars are spent on endorsing athletes? instead of being spent on programs to feed the hungry or shelter for homeless people.

In all this, there is one point that people might argue; is that they are superstars and they deserve al large amounts of money, simply because they are well-prepared players, they are people who they can admire, and at least they have a decent job instead of many corrupted one's. But this is my point, perhaps let's recall the bench players if we can call them players first of all, they receive quite large sums of money. For example, during the 1996 season, Bill Wennington of the Chicago Bulls received around 750 thousand dollars, all of this for merely sitting on the benches, because his average playing time per game was around 4 to 7 minutes, plus expenses paid. It seems pretty illogical that a Doctor or a Lawyer, who had to struggle through University and tough careers make less money than a pitcher or basketball player.

It is no wonder that the society of the United States complain about the lack of good schools, orphanages, hospitals, in general all the institutions that help the needed one's. "This a window to demonstrate where a large portion of the money is wasted." I mean how many civilized people just like me think its truly right for these athletes to receive so much income when there are millions of starving children out there in the world. I mean how many die from hunger every hour and every minute? Is it fair for an athlete to be at home all embraced with his family, enjoying the good life, while some person whether it may be a boy or a girl, old or young, black or white, be out there on the streets in search of a miserable dollar to get something into their empty stomachs.

Since these sports leagues are privately owned, then it is really up to them to pay them as they may wish; and let us on not forget that the owners of all this company get even more money, but let's not argue about that. What I really want to argue is that they should get involved more with their surrounding environments. For every professional team there is a large city showing support and love, waiting for an answer from them. Why shouldn't the players and all the personnel in charge of running these organizations give back something to the community? There are quite a few institutions that help the homeless but that is just one example; these types of deeds need to be exposed more in society. By this I am not taking away all the positive messages that athletes give to rest of us viewers and fans through commercials, songs or by visiting public places and other stuff like that; but that is just a small step toward the real problem that is out there in the streets. It would be extremely great if a percentage of income from every team were donated to their respective community. It would be ideal if for every player who makes above million dollars, that a hundred thousand would come out from their wealthy salaries and be used to the progression of the less fortunate. This is money for example, could be used to build better public schools in areas that lack good education, it could also be used to start sport programs so that all children interested in sports could have at least decent equipment to use.

But there is another arguing point that confuses my mind. How can they still complain for not being paid enough!!! It is totally ridiculous for these athletes to be upset for getting a hundred thousand dollar cut. Sadly sports have become an industry in which everything revolves around the mighty dollar. Don't these people who are set apart from the rest of human economic struggles, see the bigger picture that there is so much suffering just around the corner. They no longer play because it is fun or for the love of the game, it is an industry of overpaid ones and that is the saddest part of all. For me, it seems that they have forgotten their or backgrounds, because I mean they must have come out of struggling families and now that they earn the great living, they don't remember that once they were in need. Something must be done like I said before, it is not fair that kids now play sports with one thing in mind and that is to receive large amounts of money, instead of them thinking how great it would feel to win an important game, they plainly concentrate on what type of lifestyle they are to going to live. This is what money has done to sports; it has knocked off reasonable feeling of gratitude and modesty to those who are poor.

In conclusion, players should finally put their feet on the ground and realize that there is much to life than money and living the good life. It is definitely a slow process but one that must be done should initiate as soon as possible. This overpayment has gone far enough and long enough, these athletes do not deserve these amounts of money, they should open their eyes and recognize that there is poverty among us every single day of our lives and that is the real problem we must face.

Reading Research Paper

Reading Research Paper

How were you introduced to reading as a child?
I was introduced to reading as a child when I was probably about the 1st grade. I remember there were little excercises with different levels. 1 being the easiest level and as you pass each level the words get harder. At first we didn't begin reading all at once like books stories or anything the teacher did the reading for us. Actually as I think now reading started when I was in preschool where we first learned our ABC's. I was young and I remember having to stand up and say the ABC's along with my fellow classmates. The first person would say A the next would say B and so on. I remember not having a problem with learning the ABC's and I remember saying the ABC song where it ends "now I know my ABC's next time won't you sing with me." I also remember when I was in kindergarten the teacher reading to us. I remember the teacher read different stories I don't remember any of the stories she read but she read to us. Now in first grade I remember the teacher teaching us different words like there was a group of words for each level as the levels went up the harder the words got but I was a pretty fast learner. Then I remember when I was in 2nd grade I remember I think I started to read on my own whole sentences. I remember we would have to sit in a group and we would go around in the circle taking turns to read. I never had a hard time reading but I seen other kids who did who were kind of slow and always paused but for me I read pretty good.

What books have you particularly liked or disliked as a child, a teenager and an adult?
Well I didn't really like reading at all so reading books really wasn't my thing. I only read when the teacher made us read like during the summer or something. Some books that stick out that I remember was the particular one book called Monster where its about a boy who grows up in ghetto of Los Angeles where gangs and violence were all over the street and he joined a gang and fought against rival gangs killings murders you name it. It also tells about how he went to prison and how it was like rapes fights also murders. I enjoyed this book because it was very interesting because I use to have interests in gangs. I remember when I was little I wanted to be in a gang just like my brother who was in a local street gang also and was known but that interest vanished as my brother grew up and changed so did I.

How do you feel about reading today?
i think reading is very important today because you read all the time. You read the signs on the freeways you read the menu's to restaurants you also need to read in school. Reading is a part of life and if you don't know how to read it will be really tough to get good jobs or anything that has to do with a little reading. Reading is just as important as talking and writing it is like a communication when others aren't there to tell you what to do. You read everyday you even read while your watching T.V. I also feel reading is kind of a entertainment because I remember one time when I was watching a movie in my room and it was raining and it was a quite big storm out windy and everything and I remember as I was watching this awesome movie it was Fight Club with brad Pitt and Edward Norton I remember the lights go flickering on and off just as the movie was getting really good there completely out of no where black out!! I was really pissed since I really was now there just lying on my bed in the dark with nothing to do the time was only 6:00 and it was night. so picked up a flashlight and tried to think of something to do .. as I was thinking I flashed the flashlight at my bookshelf which had a few books in it and saw my favorite book of all time Monster which I read in the summer and enjoyed it a lot. I picked it up and started Page 1 I kept reading and reading and whoa what do you know I was in page 75. I read that long and who knew that I would be reading for fun. But reading that book entertained me for a good 2 hours but as soon as the lights turned back on I was back to watching Fight Club.

Illiteracy Research Paper

Illiteracy Research Paper

I have been deprived all of my life. I never got the chance to learn how to read or write. My parents never learned; they never went to school. They had to go to work at a young age to help support their families. When I was born, my parents raised me the best way they knew how. I turned out as an all around good person, but they could never teach me or help me learn. They never were able to read me a bedtime story from a book. It was always a made up story off the top of their heads. I did go to school, but I was always afraid to ask for help on everything. I was afraid my teacher would find out that my parents were illiterate. I did learn the alphabet, a few small words and how to count; yet I never progressed from a second grade literacy level. My husband has a sixth grade literacy level. He helps a lot, but it is still difficult for us to raise a family.

We can write a research paper on Illiteracy for you!

Now I have children of my own, and I know what it is like for them. When they get sick, I have to take them to the doctor and get medicine. I always ask the pharmacist how to dispense the medicine, so no one has to read me the directions. I don't want them to turn out like me, so I enroll them in school hoping that they take advantage of it. I come home from work, and they have papers for me to sign from faculty. I have to sign these papers for the school, but I have no idea what I am signing. I just hope I'm not signing the wrong papers where they know that I'm uneducated. I don't want my children to be embarrassed by their own mother. I try to encourage them to use the help of their teachers, so they can do their schoolwork and learn from it.

To support my kids, I work in a local factory. It is not the ideal job at all, but I can't complain. When I walked in, I was hired. I never had to write a resume or fill out an application, so my employers didn't know that I was illiterate. During training they told me almost everything I needed to know, but they still hand out letters on new policies. I take these papers home for my neighbor to read to me. She has been very helpful to me ever since I have lived here. I am capable of getting myself to work by driving. My neighbor helped me pick out a car, sign the papers, and get the payments in on time. I don't drive very much farther than a few blocks from my home. I know if I do I will not be able to recognize the landmarks around me or read the road signs, so I will get lost. I can drive to the grocery store, work, and the school. These are the only places I need to go.

I have to depend on others to get me through life. I have to trust friends, even strangers. I depend on others to tell me everything I don't know. Just the other day I had to ask a stranger on the street where the clothing store was. I hid my inability to read by saying, "Where is that street, how far is it?" I have to take my family with me to buy clothes for them. They have to try on the clothes, so I know that they fit.

I have to cook dinner now. It is the same old cheeseburgers again. I am not very creative with cooking; it is hard to cook new things from just looking at the pictures on the box. After dinner, we sit down to watch television. We watch the first channel that we come to, because I cannot read the T.V. guide to tell us what is on the television. I have to call my sister to talk to her. I can recognize numbers, so I am able to use the telephone. I cannot use the telephone book, so I have memorized the numbers I call the most. After we watch T.V. for a wile, I put my children to bed. I crawl in bed myself. I lye down and cry, because I feel I am not a good enough mother. I feel they could have better. Someone that could take them places like the movie theaters, amusement parks, and nice restaurants.

I wish, as a child, I had taken advantage of being in school. I was just embarrassed and afraid that people would know about my illiterate family. If I had just swallowed my pride and asked for help, I would be able to do all these difficult things in my life with ease. I would be able to read my children books, have a better job, and know what is going on in my life, instead of others telling me.

Ephedrine Research Paper

Ephedrine Research Paper

Ephedrine is one of the most dangerous dietary supplements. Over 800 injuries have been reported by users, some of the injuries ended in death. Ephedrine is a powerful stimulant that affects the nervous system and heart. Ephedrine has been used for 2,000 years, but only within the last ten years has the use of the stimulant been put in drinks. In this paper I will tell about what ephedrine is and what it does, the side effects of the stimulant, and the athletes who use them and the consequence of their use.

Ephedrine is a shrub like plant found in desert regions of Asia and other parts of the world. It was originally used to relieve asthma symptoms dilating the bronchioles that supply the lungs with oxygen. Ephedrine is now used for weight loss, energy boosting, to help with body building and to enhance athletic performance. This product often contains stimulants such as caffeine which will increase adverse effects. Because of the caffeine in Ephedrine it interferes with the body's ability to break up heat. Ephedrine affects the central nervous system and heart. Ephedrine is very dangerous because it affects the metabolism at a very high rate.

We can write a research paper on Ephedrine for you!

Ephedrine has many side effects occurring in injury or even death. U.S poison control center reported that in 2002, 1,178 ephedrine side effects were recorded. Most of the injuries or deaths involve heart attacks or high blood pressure leading to bleeding in the brain or a stroke. Most side effects occur among people from young to middle aged healthy adults using the product for weight control and increased energy. Some other effects are nervousness, dizziness, tremor, alterations in the blood pressure or heart rate, headache, gastro-intestinal distress, chest pain, myocardial infraction, hepatitis, stroke, seizures, psychosis, nerve damage, muscle injury, memory loss, and death. This product is used most by athletes and their goal of perfect physical condition.

Ephedrine is used by most athletes to lose weight and increase metabolism, however ephedrine is found as a major ingredient in sports drinks. This is so the athlete can reach a new level of muscle workout intensity, as well as getting lean muscle mass quicker. Ephedrine is used by athletes because it also allows the athlete not to feel as fatigued as they normally would, which would cause them to overextend themselves. Those supplements are very dangerous for athletes because it depletes the body of water as well as causing cardiovascular effects. Ephedrine was considered even more dangerous and became a much more controversial issue after the death of pitcher Steve Bechler. The NFL, International Olympic Committee, and the NCAA have all banned ephedrine use already.

According to experts ephedrine cannot keep weight off and there are no studies showing evidence that it will. There are also no studies showing that ephedrine is beneficial to athletic performance. Studies have shown that people are seriously injured by the use of ephedrine. The consumers are often unaware that ephedrine suppliers can make wide ranging heath claims about the product that have no scientific basis. The makers of this product also fail to tell the consumers about the many side effects this supplement can cause. Ephedrine can be extremely dangerous because of the acute adverse effects that it can have on people. The effects of ephedrine alkalosis are potentially powerful ones. Ephedrine is in no way a miracle drug. A comment from the Moncrief Army Community Hospital states, "We recommend that you don't take ephedrine at all. The bottom line: Ephedrine is a very dangerous herb that can kill."

Made in the USA? Research Paper

Made in the USA? Research Paper

Barbed wire. Barracks. Unsanitary, overcrowded. 12 hour work days, seven days a week. What am I describing? Sounds like a scene out of a work camp from the holocaust, or maybe some sort of strict jail. Clearly, this doesn't describe anything in the United States, right?

Wrong. The above describes the life of over 40,000 workers on a small island called Saipan. These people sew clothes for companies like The Gap, Levis, and Abercrombie and Fitch. And it's all done inside the United States.

We can write a research paper on Made in the USA? for you!

Saipan is part of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, which is a US territory (like Puerto Rico). Normally, this would mean that federal labor laws apply. But in this case, the US let the people of Saipan set their own policies. That includes a minimum wage of $3.05, compared to our minimum wage of $5.15.

These people are tricked into coming. They are recruited from countries like China and the Philippines, brought as "guest workers" under one-year contracts. They can be fired and deported at any impulse; and that is what happens if they complain or try to organize a union. Many are forced to sign contracts that give up their rights, including the freedom to practice their religion and even fall in love.

Many workers aren't paid the money that they were originally promised. Threatened by deportation, they are forced to donate work time and prevented from reporting problems. Payment for food is taken straight from their salary.

But why do the companies use Saipan? Surely, they could pay lower wages to workers in other countries. Well, the answer lies in the label. The next time you see an Abercrombie and Fitch tee-shirt, check the label. Chances are, it proudly sports "Made in the USA". If anyone ever really notices it at all, this label usually leads them to think, albeit subconsciously, "Oh, it was made in the USA. That means that they followed all labor laws to make it. And I'm supporting the Americans who made it by purchasing this. I think I'll buy it. Plus, it looks nice." The "Made in the USA" label is an important selling point for many companies. Take, for example, Juicy Couture. Their whole selling point is the phrase "Made in the glamorous USA". Needless to say, this marketing tactic compensates for the money lost on salary. These companies have also saved money by not having to pay the taxes required for importing something into the US. In 1998, the factories saved an estimated $200 million by not having to pay these taxes.

This essay was not designed to stomp out all breakage of labor laws. I took a survey, asking if you knew that a company broke labor laws to make its products, would you still buy things from that company? At first, I thought most would say no, I would stop buying, but the results turned out to be 50-50. Most of the people that said yes gave reasons quite similar to that of Amy Rodriguez, "Even if I did stop buying from them, other people would still be, thereby defeating the purpose of my boycott of that store. Why should I inconvenience myself if it will have no effect on the situation itself?"

I know that many companies use underpaid, overworked workers to make their products, and I'm not trying to wipe that all out. I think that these companies shouldn't lie to the consumers and say that their products are made in the US; although they technically are, these companies have an unfair advantage over the companies that get that label the right way. It is manipulating the consumer.

So next time you go to a clothes store, check the label. And really check. Don't be fooled by a "Made in the USA" mask. If you're someone who makes a point to buy clothes that you know for sure is made in the US, you'd better check on it. Or if you're not that kind of person, think twice before you buy whatever it is; think about who really made it.

Role Models Research Paper

Role Models Research Paper

Over the years we have had many great people. Some call them role models, some call them legends but no matter how you say it they will always be known for their help towards people. Three of these remarkable men are: Confucius the philosopher, Pancho Villa the fierce fighter, and Walt Disney the American entertainer. In their own way, each one of these men have contributed to their followers. Confucius however, was known because of his philosophy.

Kongfuzi, also known as Confucius was alive from 551-479 B.C. Kongfuzi's name means "Kong the philosopher" or "Great master Kong". Confucius was born in the small state of Lu. Even though he lived in poverty, he had a great education and started teaching at the age of 22. Besides being a teacher, he was also a minor government official in different posts in Lu. The truth is that he was not known too well as a government official but more as a teacher. When he died at the age of 72 he had already taught over 3,000 disciples. Nowadays people still learn about his greatness and they will continue learning.

We can write a research paper on Role Models for you!

Francisco Villa mostly known as Pancho Villa was born on June 5 1878. He got his name from the outlaw Francisco Villa. The reason why he got the name from an outlaw was because he killed the owner of a real estate for betraying his sister. Because of his crime he had to spend hiss teen years as a fugitive looting banks, and robbing trains to survive. In 1910 he joined he joined Francisco Madera of the rebel forces. Pancho Villa was known to kill with out fear; he killed more than 50 people. President Woodrow Wilson did not like him and ordered the American forces to apprehend him. He was able to elude capture but his followers were killed. In 1920 he retired but three years later his enemies assassinated him.

Walter Disney born 1901made many of his own dreams come true. Nobody knew if it was the love for technology, cinematography or business sense that made him so inventive but whatever it was it really helped him accomplish a lot. At the age of 17 he dropped out of school lied about how old he was and started working for a hospital as an ambulance driver in France. When he returned from France he knew that what he really wanted to do was be a commercial artist. Although during that time World War 2 sidetracked his dreams he accomplished a lot. He created a movie studio that won 29 academy awards. He has the most successful amusement park in the world. In November of 1928 Mickey Mouse had his depute "Steamboat Willie" which was a major hit.

As you can see all of these men accomplished something that they really wanted since they were young children. These are just a few of the very many people that have contributed to the world and to themselves. They have many people happy all over the world and will continue to do so through out the years to come. I am sure that amongst the people we know and love there will be the new Walt Disney, Confucius, and maybe even Pancho Villa.

Kashmir Research Paper

Kashmir Research Paper

Kashmir gained its independence from Britain in 1947. Yet, do you think that their independence led to real freedom? No. After gaining its independence, Kashmir enters another bondage. India and Pakistan both claim the land to be fully theirs and Kashmir wanted to be its own state. To try to resolve this problem, Both Pakistan and India went to the United Nations for help. The UN urged India to bring down its armed forces in the region and had asked that Pakistan stop terrorism in the country. None of the sides obeyed the UN and hate grew larger between the two nations. This makes the situation much more serious because both of the countries possess nuclear powers and therefore have the power to destroy each other and their allied forces.

We can write a research paper on Kashmir for you!

France believes that Kashmir should be its own independent nation because that is what the people in Kashmir asked for. Both India and Pakistan want Kashmir because of their own advantages, not because they wish for true justice. India wants Kashmir so that is can spread Hinduism and spread its country landmass. Pakistan on the other hand wants to spread Islam. After being released from British supervision, France believes that Kashmir really belongs to no one and should therefore start its own nation.

Many solutions have been used to solve this problem, however, none have worked to well whatsoever. France strongly believes that India and Pakistan should acknowledge that people of Kashmir by respecting their rights and freedoms. We would also like the People of Kashmir to cooperate with Commission appointed by India, Pakistan, and representatives Kashmir. They should also realize that at present time, they could not possibly maintain a stable condition unless they find a nation or organization whom they believe can help them. Overall, France believes that only the people of Kashmir can decide which country they would want to abide to.

Ghosts of Mississippi Essay

Ghosts of Mississippi Essay

The year is 1963. The downstairs bathroom door of the Hinds County District Attorney's office dawns the phrase, "Whites Only" in bold white paint. As the years passed, as new laws were passed, as two trials for the murder of Medgar Evers passed through the halls of the building the paint started to fade. When the third trial for Byron de la Beckwith comes around in 1994, the paint is all but gone but if one looks hard enough you can still see the faded outlines of that sign. Though the sign bears no significance anymore, it is a perfect representation of what society is like. We would like to think that our society is civilized enough to treat everyone equally, but as one looks closer and closer the inequality is easily recognized.

We can write a custom essay on Ghosts of Mississippi for you!

In 1963 (when Byron de la Beckwith was tried the first time for the murder of civil rights leader, Medgar Evers), it was improbable(if now impossible)for a white man to be convicted of killing a Negro. It just did not happen in those times. At least in 1994, the society has come far enough to give justice to anyone who does a crime, no matter his skin color, race, creed, or gender. Another improvement is that the bigotry and racist mentality is diminishing from generation to generation. Bobby DeLaughter, the grandson of the very man who let de la Beckwith go free some 30 years before his own blood put that man in jail for a crime he deserved to pay for.

Even though society has come a long way from the ways of the Jim Crow South, it still has some ways to go. Some members of society still cannot find it in themselves to understand other cultures and races. When Bobby DeLaughter moved closer and closer to getting an extradition, the number of calls from disgruntled citizens increased. Some even vandalized his car. Others continue to live the ways of their racist past. People like Byron de la Beckwith or the two police officers that purged in order to kelp a fellow tribesmen continue to live in ignorance to the fact that blacks are a vital and successful part of society.

Maybe in a few years that sign will no longer be visible. However, until then we must stride to understand and tolerate other races and creeds.

Lithuania Term Paper

Lithuania Term Paper

Lithuania is a very beautiful country. It is very rich with many plants and animals. But of course we must save what we have. The most beautiful part of nature is our thick forests. They cover 27,9% our all territory.

So we can admire our woods. But they are not like they were 5 or 6 hundred ago. Then our forests were just inpassable and full of different animals. But many people have cut these beautiful woods and now we have only 18,000 separate plots. But now when people understand the threat of extinction and many organisations plant new pine forests. But as trees grow very slow we can see these new-planted forests only after some time.

We can write a term paper on Lithuania for you!

38,1% of all wooded area are pine forests, 20,7% fir forests and 21,1 birch groves. Also we have such beautiful trees as alders, ashes, asps, limes, maples, poplars and oaks. These trees usually grow separately form others or in mixed woods. They occupy the rest wooded-territory. But of course many of them grow in cities and separately from others and singly, especially oaks. But sometimes we can find a beautiful and also dreary oak-grove. These groves were honoured in till the 14th century by the pagans and are admired now. They are the symbol of the strenght of Lithuania.

Lithuania's woods are rich in mushrooms and berries. Many people like gathering them. It is quite popular in Lithuania. Lithuanians gather raspberries, wild strawberries, cranberries and billberries.

Lithuania is very beautiful with its running rivers and blue lakes. Many different fishes are there and fishing is a popular hoby in LT. But there are many areas where you can't fish nor hunt. These are the reservations in Lithuania and they are made to save our nature and all the components of it: flora and fauna. But you can always find a place for fishing and pick a convenient time for hunting durning the hunting season.

Lithuania's climate is not very hot so we don't have such breeding animals like tigers, ostriches, hippos, kangaroos and others. But we have such animals like wolves, foxes, hares, bears, elks, squirrels and wild boars. Some of them sometimes make a lot of trouble to the village people but on the whole they are loved and carred of. Also we have such beautiful and big birds as eagles and hawks. Many trees and electric stoles have nests of the storks. They fly back to their sweet homes from warm countries in spring. Many lithuanian birds hibernate in Lithuania and sometimes they have problems with food. Such birds as crows find the food easily, but for pigeons and sparrows it is extreemly difficult. And then people try to help them by putting some food in the balconies or in similar places which are easily accessable by the birds.

People try to help bigger animals too. They build feeding-racks and put some food for elks and zools. These racks are built in the woods and they help to survive for herbvivorous animals. Wolfes and bears eat meat so they can find the food themselves. But they are saved too. The hunt of some of them are prohibited or divided into seasons when the threat of extinction is not so high. Many animals and birds are written into Lithuania's Red Book. So it is against the law to hunt or kill these animals.

There are many endangered plants in Lithuania and they are also written in the Red Book. Then none can uproot and pluck these plants. Some of the beautiful flowers are there. And people try to plant and grow them artificially. Then the flowers and other plants are grown in hothouses and the number of plant species grown artificially is about 800.

I think that our woods are safe. We don't have very dangerous animals. Of course a bear is not vary kind to people when it is hungry, but all the animals fear of people because may of them made much harm to them. They have their habitats and try to stay there as long as they can. There are very little poisonous snakes. The popular non-poisonous snake is grass-snake. It has its history too. And it was admired by many people long ago and old people still bring food (milk) to them and keep them in the cellar or near the house.

Many woods and other plants are killed by man's chemical industry, factories. Also a big harm is made by the fertilisation. The fertilisation is used very frequently and it kills mane insects and worms but it also kills a big part of our nature.

We must be in charge of the nature and environment around us. We must save our home and the place we live in. all the people must know that nature is our home and we take a big part of it to survive. So we must give something back. It can be love to animals and plants and help.

Jerry Maguire Term Paper

Jerry Maguire Term Paper

A defining moment in my life occurred by watching a movie. The movie was "Jerry Maquire" which starred Tom Cruise and Cuba Gooding Jr. Tom Cruise is a sports agent in the movie and Cuba Gooding Jr is the athlete. Both the movie and sports management have caught my attention. As Tom Cruise is a sports agent in "Jerry Maquire" is the same as myself being a sports agent through Sports Management. Sports Management with it's versatility has broaden the scope of my education and view of life.

The reason why I chose my major, is to become a sports agent. Due to the fact that I've played sports all my life. Through sports management I feel that closeness of being with a sport . Plus as an athlete, and a sports agent to have the two go hand and hand. They interact so well with each other especially for an individual in my case who loves sports. One of the reasons why I love sports, is the competition between all the competitors. The same could be said for being a sports agent, where the agent is getting the best deal for his or her athlete.

We can write a term paper on Jerry Maguire for you!

Of course, I was always interested in becoming a movie critic or sports commentator. Considering the circumstances a change was needed. That change came by switching over to Sports Management, still I have love for both either a movie critic or sports commentator.

Through the classes and the professors that have been taught, I feel that a significant accomplishment has strengthened my confidence in pursuing my career to be a sports agent. My ambition tells me to challenge myself, this is one of the factors for why I attended Florida International University, a place where I can gain life experience and an educational success in my future. Hopefully with my major, it will provide me with a profound grasp of what it can offer me, as well as the broad perspective I will need to succeed in my field.

I chose a major that I could benefit from. I was attracted to the idea of the professors and their reputation as a big reason why I chose my major. Many professors told me that Sports Management would be a great opportunity to explore. They say that when they speak to me about it, they see a fascination that I have for it.

My work involves networking, management, etc. I am regarded by my peers as a nonstop worker. I have achieved all that I have set out to accomplish. Sometimes my ambitions, however, demand that I get back into communications. Yet, I feel a certain positive outlook on Sports Management. Hopefully, I will get career opportunities and challenges in this major.

A sense of eagerness has come over me to study more and more for Sports Management. By attending Florida International University, which will provide me with a profound grasp of management, as well as a broad perspective I will need to succeed in what an individual does.
The other options that have been considered for next year are fairly limited at the moment. I would like to continue playing basketball, make some money invest it, do some work in movies or sports commentating. Yet, if it doesn't work there is always my major to fall back on as a security blanket.

In conclusion, I would like to use my time wisely for myself to accelerate in the right direction by setting the correct/ultimate goal for me at the same time, I am more than ready to move on to a major transition in my educational life.

California Recall Research Paper

California Recall Research Paper

A matter of conscience invites me to declare my perspectives as I cast my vote for Arnold Schwarzenegger as Governor of the State of California. As the rest of the world peers in and amuses themselves at the state of our State, I would like to present a perspective of a ninth generation Californian, a product of our public schools, and a graduate of our University system. In the recall election, my vote is cast based upon three essential arguments.

1.) The truth of the matter is, no matter whom California elects, no one will be able to solve our budget crisis. Over half of our state's financial resources are allocated to the numerous propositions that are routinely passed by the voting public, and cannot be touched by the executive branch. Even Harry Houdini could not get us out of the financial and bureaucratic mess that we have created for ourselves. In order to balance the budget, we will need to drastically raise taxes, which the citizens of California will not allow to happen. This is a very important point in the context of national politics, as it is becoming very apparent that, in the near future, California will need a federal bailout. Many of our states are racing towards bankruptcy, with California as the case subject, and our national government is not anticipating their future bailouts. Already the national government, under this administration, has greatly reduced the funds allocated to relief of the States. While our national deficit soars, we are failing to anticipate these future expenditures.

We can write a research paper on California Recall for you!

2.) As for political capabilities, as career politicians Bustamante and McClintock are more familiar with our budget and the nuances of our governmental structure. However, Arnold, as Governor, has many advantages. Although a Republican, he is very liberal, as is much of California (even our conservatives here are liberal conservatives). Arnold's high profile will give this great state, the fifth largest economy in the world (or so the commercials tell me), the visibility and cultural gravity that it deserves. No one expects Arnold to become entrenched in partisan politics or embody the right wing of the Republican Party, but instead to stay, more or less, in the medium of the political spectrum. The fact that Maria Shriver is his wife, would lead me to believe that much of his personal political advise would be coming from democratic leaders, as well/in addition to Republican leadership, providing for a sound base.

3.) To vote for Arnold as Governor is very Californian. While I am hesitant to embrace the capitalist and commercial culture that is growing ever more prevalent in our nation's composition (I have neither refinanced nor bought a cell phone that emails pictures), I do believe local culture is special and essential. California is unique is so many ways, and the fact is, electing Arnold is very Californian. In some respect, leaders of localities should reflect the customs and cultures of their regions- just as I expect the Prime Minister of Great Britain to reflect in some capacity the British, the Chancellor of Germany to reflect in some capacity the Germans, and the Governor of say, Georgia or Montana, to reflect in some capacity the citizens of Georgia or Montana; Arnold is very Californian. Immigrant (so many of us here are), Hollywood, and a man who found fame and fortune in California- think Silicon Valley, the Gold Rush, and telecommunications.

Final Note- In respects to the notion that a "No" vote is prudent, and that the recall is too expensive and frivolous, that may be correct. However, it is my opinion that it is here now, and the time and money have already been spent. Whether we vote no or yes, the costs have occurred. Therefore, I do not have a problem with ousting a tremendously unpopular public servant. And as for my new choice, I would like to think I'm voting Californian!!!

Frida Kahlo Research Paper

Frida Kahlo Research Paper

Frida Khalo was born in Mexico in 1910. She is known as one of the most important 20th Century painters, and in 1983 her work was declared the property of the Mexican State. Although born in Mexico, Khalo is of mixed race, as her father was a German photographer, and her mother was a Mexican but of Indian extraction. I find this intriguing as when I see her face it has an unusual combination of two different nationalities.

There were two events in Frida Khalo's life that was of crucial importance, not just to her as an individual but events, which thrust her into expressing herself through her painting. When she was 18, a bus accident put her into hospital for a year with a smashed spinal cord and fractured pelvis. It was in her sick bed that she started to paint. At twenty-one, she married the world famous Mexican mural artist Diego Rivera. In 1930 they left Mexico for San Francisco, because Diego's reputation was growing quickly in America. Many of her paintings show her pain both from the accident that left her unable to have children and the grief that Rivera's occasional affairs prompted coupled with the homesickness she suffered for much of her life. Her husband described her work as being "As loveable as a beautiful smile and as cruel as all of the bitterness of life." I have included some examples of her work, which I think are both very powerful and moving. Her paintings are mostly small format self-portraits. The colours she uses in these pictures are earth tones, and her portraits are very naturalistic.

We can write a research paper on Frida Kahlo for you!

I used Frida Khalo because I had never seen her work before and came across it almost by accident while looking for portrait artists. Her growing reputation in the USA led to her paintings being shown in a series of exhibitions, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Boston Institute of Contemporary Arts, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. From then on she received a fellowship and taught at La Esmerelda experimental art school.

The first picture shown on page 1,"The Broken Column" seems to be related to the road accident. This was actually painted as a stone pillar e.g. Nelson's column. Frida uses this column's cracked and crumbling state to represent her broken spine. The artist is wearing surgical braces to hold her body together again along with a number of pins which may signify her immense pain and the fact that her body needs repairing after it has fallen apart.

To me this painting is almost screaming out to the viewer to look at how she is hurt on both the outside and the inside. This painting I believe is Frieda expressing her feelings of how she regards herself and how she feels. The empty, deserted plains behind her give a feeling of her being on her own, alone in the world and her only emotions seem to be tears.

The second picture was painted in a hospital and clearly shows Frida shedding tears for everything that she has lost. The main theme in this is her abortion, which she suffered as a young woman. This was painted while she was in the Henry Ford Hospital in 1932. The strings leading from Frida all appear to be symbolically linked to the pain she is suffering. She is holding onto a baby, a wilting flower and also the bone structure of a pelvis. Unlike a lot of her paintings, where she uses natural the colours and forms e.g. Countryside landscapes, and leaves or sun, to create a bright outlook on life. Here there is nothing but a mixed dull sky, and an industrial landscape behind her. There is nothing that really gives a sense of hope, it all seems to show a look of desperation and dullness.

The next four portraits are included to show her life from 1926 to 1947. It is interesting to look at these pictures because one knows that in amidst these portraits is a very hurt and suffering human being. The portrait made in 1926 makes her look very dark and mysterious. The only bright colour in this painting is her skin, and this makes her the most important looking thing in the picture, whereby the eye is drawn straight in to her. She also seems to give a look of uneasiness, protecting herself from the viewer with her arm and hand placed across her body. This is a very different painting from the next one made in 1930. Here she looks quite relaxed, in lighter clothing and a brighter background. There is still a feeling of uneasiness, as if she does not fit there. The portrait painted in 1940 is also of a disturbing nature. This of course is when she was in the midst of her marriage break up and her miscarriage. The necklace of thorns I think is very symbolic of her piece of mind at the time. The black cat looking over her left shoulder, and the dead bird hanging from the thorns create a very eerie atmosphere, and the picture as a whole gives me a feeling of desperate sadness. The painting done in 1947 is the only self-portrait where Frida wears her hair loose.

On page 4 we see one of the first and last portraits Frida made of herself. In picture 1, her last portrait we see her husband in her heart, and his mistress, Maria in her mind. The cat which appears in much of her work, is again positioned behind her left shoulder. In picture two, the frame intrigued me. The artist uses ornate designs and vivid colours to surround her, which gives me the feeling that she is happy. Frida Kahlo's work has made me look harder, and become more aware of the feelings being expressed by the artist in order to create their work.

Vince Foster Research Paper

Vince Foster Research Paper

Contrary to reports issued by the government under the administration of Bill Clinton, all forensic evidence points to the probability that Vince Foster did not kill himself. Regardless of the supporting evidence regarding his "suicide note," motive, and knowledge of the Clinton's involvement in the Whitewater investigation, the crime scene investigation and further forensic evidence scrutinized by the FBI do not in the least support the suicide theory. The primary forensic evidence negating the suicide theory centers around the blood, or lack thereof, at the crime scene, and the evidence regarding the gun - fingerprints, blood, and ballistics.

We can write a research paper on Vince Foster for you!

Unfortunately for whoever murdered Vince Foster, they did not accurately portray the suicide scene. If Vince Foster allegedly did shoot himself in the mouth, pointing towards the top of his head, the bullet would have passed through the nasal cavity. Since the heart continues to beat provided that there is oxygenated blood in the body, and considering that this was a direct head wound, the heart should have continued to pump for at the MINIMUM a few moments, producing an outpour of blood from the nasal/sinus cavity. This effect is similar to a bloody nose, however, at least one thousand times more powerful since the nasal/sinus cavity is completely obliterated by the lead bullet. However, the crime scene was found with hardly any blood. In fact, the first person to find the body and all following reports dictate that there was a small trickle of blood on his face that did not in the least resemble the explosive blood scene that investigators should have found. Complementary to this, there was hardly any blood in the immediately surrounding area. The only blood appeared at the base of his nape, where it appeared in large quantities, as seen on his shirt. This dearth of evidence supporting the suicide theory is in direct contrast to the forensic evidence.

Another major component that points to the impossibility of Foster's suicide is in regard to the gun and its ballistics. Theoretically, if Foster did shoot himself in the mouth, then his hand and the gun should be covered with blood. However, even with the most sensitive chemical tests, there was no blood found on the gun and from visual observations of the photo leaked to Time magazine, there obviously was no blood on Foster's sleeve or hand. Fingerprint tests revealed that Foster's fingerprints were only present at the base of the handle and did not appear anywhere on the chamber or shaft of the gun. In fact, DNA tests on the fingerprints, revealed that the fingerprints present on the barrel of the gun were more likely belonging to a Hispanic or Black person. The coronary report from the Medical Offices of Northern Virginia did not find any powder spots at the top of Foster's skull or on the palate of his mouth. This in inconsistent with the suicide theory, for if Foster did fire the gun on himself, there should be an excess of powder marks throughout his mouth, sinus cavity, and roof of his skull. Also, the powder marks that were found were completely different in shape, density, and origin to that supposedly fired from the .38 caliber gun that Foster owned.

This mere sampling of the forensic evidence regarding the suicide/murder of Vince Foster stands in direct contrast to the information released under the Clinton administration. The lack of blood at the crime scene makes it quite unlikely that Foster shot himself and the evidence regarding the gun and its ballistic information make it almost impossible that Foster shot himself. This is a minimum sample of the evidence that could be used to incriminate someone working within the White House for the murder of Vincent W. Foster.

Duke Ellington Essay

Duke Ellington Essay

Duke Ellington is definitely not one of my favorite musicians, but I have a lot of respect for him. Edward Kennedy Ellington was born April 29, 1899 in D.C. Around when he turned seven or eight he began to take lessons for the piano, but he hated it. He actually preferred sports, particularly baseball, rather than music, particularly the piano.

He got over his stage fright at his first job selling peanuts at baseball games, because he wasn't used too being around a lot of people. When he was 14, he began to sneak into pool rooms. That's where he learned to deal with a lot of different people. During one summer, when he was a high school student, he heard about a really great piano player, Harvey Brooks. The next week, he attended one of his shows. When he came home, he had a new urge to play the piano. That's when his musical career really started.

Three months before graduating from high school, he dropped out of school. He then took steps toward independence; he moved out of his mom and dad's house, bought his own home, became his band's booking agent, and got married too. On March 11, 1919, his son was born.

In 1923, he moved to NYC. He got on the radio and soon he was pretty famous. In 1928, he found a productions company and they let him publish his music. Then recording companies wanted his business. His band actually became one of the most wanted bands throughout the US, and even the world.

In his lifetime, he had played over 20,000 performances throughout the world. He was given the Legion of Honor by France, and the United States government gave him the presidential medal of freedom. He died in 1974, but during his whole life, he wrote as many as hundreds of musical compositions and why I really like him is that each and every one had a different but strong impact on those who listened to him. Duke Ellington actually inspired a lot of the music that people listen to today.

Literature Review Term Paper

Literature Review Term Paper

There are many different opinions concerning the trend of rock music- how it evolved, where it is, and what it will be like in the future. Using some articles I found via the Internet, I attempted to see how other people viewed some of these topics.

The first article I read was by Chris Bonastia called "Sucking in the 70's", from The New Republic. It is a poorly written article, leaving the reader unsure about what the author was trying to say about the subject of radio stations playing 70s music. He starts with the always-fun look at "the good old days", mentioning suede sneakers, Levi's corduroys, platform shoes, and Six-Million-Dollar Man t-shirts that were around in his day. He then goes on to discuss the format of certain radio stations and how a lot of new stations are converting to playing rock music from the 70s, and so far it's a hit. He compares it to putting on a pair of old sneakers for middle aged white men. It feels good, and you don't know you miss it until you try it. He goes on to mention a lot of songs from the 70's and the memories for most of those guys that they bring back. However, the author never discusses how the younger generations react to this music. In fact, he doesn't mention the younger generations at all in this article. He concludes with stating that most listeners listen because of memories, but everyone listens because of the predictability that these stations have.

The second article is by Hugh Porter and is called "Rock Revival" from Time. It is a very short article basically about the new rock bands that are coming out, and who their influences are and whom they sound like compared to their early rock band influences. The author states "rock's revival will continue, with new bands bringing some much needed diversity to the scene". The author then concludes with the statement, "The really exciting stuff is happening in the clubs--with hot, young primitive bands inspiring others. So get out to a show, wherever you are".

The third article is by John Leo and is called "Rock Music's Din and Decline" from U.S News and World Report. It is a very well written article clearly stating the author's views and using examples to support them. It's about how rock music has lost its meaning and substance. The article starts with discussing the Jimi Hendrix version of the Star Spangled Banner and all of the noise that Jimi plays during, through, and around the melody, and how all of it has reference to the Vietnam War, how it has meaning, and how it has substance. He then compares that to more modern music, which is also very noisy. However, it's noisy just to be noisy, to be shocking. The music has lost melody, which, the author states, makes music music. He then goes on to discuss the lyrics of today's music, and how "the idea is to shock through cruelty and obscenity--lyrics and album images that focus on bloody body parts, dead fetuses, raped and beaten women". The author concludes with saying that the spread of this new music into the mainstream is a social problem, and then uses strong images to back it up.

These three authors agree and disagree in many aspects of their articles. They all agree that 70's rock music good music. The first author doesn't discuss newer rock music at all, while the last two have totally opposite opinions, one thinking how rock is coming back and how it's awesome, the other thinking that it's dead and awful.

Flag Burning Essay

Flag Burning Essay

The controversy in question here is the issue of burning the American flag, is it wrong for the courts to try and stop it or is it the right of the American citizens to freely express their thoughts and opinions. The one side of the issue says that it is the American citizens right to practice freedom of expression. That right is protected under the first amendment, so in all actuality the courts have no say when it comes to this.

Yet, some people are trying to write amendments and get them passed so the courts can outlaw the burning of the American flag. These amendments have not been passed yet they all have been voted down, but it is only a matter of time before one of them does pass, and the American peoples freedom of expression and speech will be taking away. It is ironic to think that the flag stands for the freedom of the people and the people are the ones who are burning it which to some might say that they do not care about their freedom cause they are burning the flag.

The other side to this controversy is that the American flag is a symbol of this country's freedom which people fought and died for to get and keep. The flag might not mean the same thing to everybody, but to some it brings tears to their eyes when they see the American flag, and it kills them watching people burn and disrespect what our ancestors fought and died for. It is not always disrespecting the country and what it stands for, but rather the people who fought to obtain the freedom that is protecting us from getting into any trouble for burning the flag. This issue can be really sensitive to some people, but to fully understand it and maybe take sides, you would have to look at both sides very thoroughly and that is the focus of my research paper.

Maurice Ravel Research Paper

Maurice Ravel Research Paper

Maurice Ravel's mother, Maurie Delouart and father, Joseph Ravel, met in Spain in the year of 1873. They were married in 1874 and had their first child, Maurice in the year 1875. Maurice was born in the Basses-Pyrenees town, but soon after he was born his family moved to Paris. Joseph Ravel was just an engineer, and an amateur painter, but he encouraged his son to study music at an early age. Even though Ravel was brought up in Paris, Ravel was always close to his Basque heritage.

At the young age of seven Ravel began his first piano lesson by Henri Ghys. Five years later he began studying harmony with Delibe's pupil Charles-Rene. Ravel attempted to start producing compositions. They included; variations on a chorale by Schumann, variations on a theme from Grieg's Peer Gynt and a sonata movement. Two years after studying with Rene he received piano lessons from Emile Decombes. In 1889 Ravel received admission to Eugene Anthiome's prepatory piano class at the Conservatorie, in which Decombes was a professor at. Maurice entered the conservatory when he was 14 and remained there for 16 years. He became friends with avant-garden poets, painters, and musicians who believed in his talents, and they called themselves apaches. At first, audiences and critics criticized his music. Only a few recognized the quality of his work.

He was acknowledged as the foremost composer in France, and was in demand to conduct his works throughout Europe. In 1928, he was invited to tour US. In his last years, he was tormented by restlessness and sleeplessness. He found comfort in the atmosphere of Parisian nightclubs, where he listened for hours to American jazz. When he was near 60, he had a rare brain disease that attacked speech and motor coordination. He became impossible for him to read notes, to remember melodies, or to write. He had a risky operation, but he never regained consciousness and died. Maurice Ravel also had a willingness to speak out on what he thought was important. He ended up founding the Societe Musicals Independente in 1909. In January 1909 he wrote to Koechlin announcing his decision to start a new society. It would be open to performing French and foreign works regardless of genre or style. This signaled hid bid for independence from the authority of the Schola Cantorum.

Ravel was also a national artist. He was drawn to the images that fascinated the Impressionalistic painters, daybreak, sea, interplay of water and light. He exploited Spanish dance rhythms, worshipped French harpsichordists, and experimented with scales of medieval and foreign music. Ravel's music glistens with brightness that contrasts with twilight softness of Debussy's. His rhythms are more incisive. His sense of key is firmer, harmony is more dissonant, and his melodies are broader. Ravel's orchestration, unlike Debussy's, derived from 19th century masters, like Berlioz, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Richard Strauss. He was more drawn to Classical forms much earlier in his career than Debussy, who turned to them toward the end.

Ravel was a master of the French art song. Among his works are two song cycles, Sheherazade, connected to folktales of The Arabian Nights, and Songs of Madagascar, whose poetry and music cries out against the evils of French colonialism. His orchestral works won the admiration of international public. Spanish Rhapsody, Mother Goose, and ballets Daphnis and Chloe, La valse, and Bolero. Admired too are Classically oriented Piano Concerto in G and Piano Concerto for the Left Hand, a masterpiece written for pianist Paul Wittgenstein, who lost his right arm in WWI. He was popular in US. His harmonies and orchestration attracted for jazz arrangers and Holly wood composers.

Ravel had retained the honor as France's leading composer after Debussy's death in 1918. He was offered the Legion Honneur and refused it. This status alienated him from his fellow employees. He soon moved west of Paris and lived with his cats and was looked after by his housekeeper until his death.
