Ghosts of Mississippi Essay

Ghosts of Mississippi Essay

The year is 1963. The downstairs bathroom door of the Hinds County District Attorney's office dawns the phrase, "Whites Only" in bold white paint. As the years passed, as new laws were passed, as two trials for the murder of Medgar Evers passed through the halls of the building the paint started to fade. When the third trial for Byron de la Beckwith comes around in 1994, the paint is all but gone but if one looks hard enough you can still see the faded outlines of that sign. Though the sign bears no significance anymore, it is a perfect representation of what society is like. We would like to think that our society is civilized enough to treat everyone equally, but as one looks closer and closer the inequality is easily recognized.

In 1963 (when Byron de la Beckwith was tried the first time for the murder of civil rights leader, Medgar Evers), it was improbable(if now impossible)for a white man to be convicted of killing a Negro. It just did not happen in those times. At least in 1994, the society has come far enough to give justice to anyone who does a crime, no matter his skin color, race, creed, or gender. Another improvement is that the bigotry and racist mentality is diminishing from generation to generation. Bobby DeLaughter, the grandson of the very man who let de la Beckwith go free some 30 years before his own blood put that man in jail for a crime he deserved to pay for.

Even though society has come a long way from the ways of the Jim Crow South, it still has some ways to go. Some members of society still cannot find it in themselves to understand other cultures and races. When Bobby DeLaughter moved closer and closer to getting an extradition, the number of calls from disgruntled citizens increased. Some even vandalized his car. Others continue to live the ways of their racist past. People like Byron de la Beckwith or the two police officers that purged in order to kelp a fellow tribesmen continue to live in ignorance to the fact that blacks are a vital and successful part of society.

Maybe in a few years that sign will no longer be visible. However, until then we must stride to understand and tolerate other races and creeds.
