A programming language is a vocabulary; a set of grammatical rules for instructing a computer to execute specific tasks. There are many different types of languages, each one has a unique set of "keywords" and a special language rules for organizing the instructions that are given.
The Dade County Medical Association (DCMA) is a non-profit organization that works with and for physicians. Doctors in general, are known for their lack of negotiating and technical skills; therefore, a lot of the tasks that we perform are still done in hard copies. Faxing documents, creating physical files, and obtaining information online and printing it to mail out, are some of the daily activities at the DCMA.

A database that keeps all the data about the physicians such as date of birth, University, graduation date, office and home address, etc, is managed by a parent association, The Florida Medical Association. Information for the physicians is posted on a website. This site was created on a frontpage template and it was uploaded about tow years ago; it is poorly designed, not updated very often, and mainly used to upload critical information.
Miami Medicine is the monthly publication of the DCMA. This "newsletter" is a powerful tool that also provides information to the physicians. In recent times, the DCMA discovered their need for a newer and better tool that would allow placing information, as well as their publication online. According to the needs of the association, XML (Short for Extensible Markup Language) seems to be the best choice. XML was designed especially for web documents. XML allows designers to create their own customized tags that eventually become languages. This enables the definition, transmission, validation, and interpretation of data between applications and between organizations (1).
Liz Sullivan, one of the IT people at the Florida Medical Association, explained the following: "In the evaluation process of different languages, XML was superior to the other languages because its files contain Unicode. Any word processing software, and/or text can be used. This makes it "universal" in a way, because Unicode embodies all key scripts of the world. It is very possible that XML is the native file format for a software package or something that is imported or exported".
The implementation of the software at the DCMA is still a "working process"; however, the objective is very clear: "Creating a tool that will decrease the administrative time spent by the staff in obtaining information and making it available to all physicians and/or other related entities."
When developed, this tool should make more efficient or modernize many processes. An increase in precision and correctness, as well as some obstacles, are expected. Change in general requires a lot of time, dedication, coordination, and planning. A great team is working on this, therefore, great results are expected.
