Research Paper Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven"
In the poem, "The Raven" by Edgar Allan Poe, a simple bird harasses the narrator. The narrator drifts off to sleep when suddenly there's someone tapping at his door, in which he believes to be nothing more than a late night visitor. It is apparent that the narrator is depressed over the loss of the love of his life, who he refers to as a "rare and radiant maiden who the angels name Lenore." The effects of the chilling night has the narrator's nerves uneasy, the movement of his curtains sends thrills of shear terror through him that he's never experienced before. As he calms him self down by repeating that it is just a mere late night visitor at his door.

He then makes the kind gesture to apologize to the visitor for his long apprehension to open the door, blaming it on his nap, but as he opens the door there's nothing there. Believing that maybe he had been sucked into a dream, he peers out into the darkness were he murmurs the word "Lenore" and the words were repeated by his guest. Then inside the house by the windowsill, there came a tapping that was much louder than the one before. As the narrator opened the shutters, then there came a raven that flew in and situated itself upon a statue above the door. Now, I don't know if the narrator had any mental problems, or rather the raven was a figment of his imagination. But there are some comments pertaining to the raven, which can assist in finding out whether the raven was real or not. Basically, since the raven actually was seen by the narrator flying into his home, should be the most consequential piece of evidence. Next, (which I believe was meant in a jokingly way), the narrator speaks to the raven asking why it has drifted from the shore to his residence. Next, the author says quoth the raven "Nevermore," practically implying that the bird might infact have the ability to talk. The narrator continues to speak to the raven, but the only response obtained is "Nevermore." Then begins to challenge many theories of why the bird is in the state its in, one of his ideas is that once it had an abusive keeper, and the only word it now knows is "Nevermore." Then the narrator admits to being on some drug called Nepenthe, that he was taking to get over the lost of Lenore, and begins to babble how God had sent the raven. He pleads with the raven to tell him whether or not hes a "bird or devil," and even refers to the bird as a prophet. He ask the raven whether or not if Lenore had been seen in Eden, but the bird replies "Nevermore." And as the story ends it seems as if the bird will haunt the man for ever, as if maybe it were sent as a constant reminder of his dear love Lenore. Promising an life's eternity of unhappiness.
One thing that I would like to point out is that I enjoyed the way that the author sets the mood of the story by using words that helps you paint a picture of where the story could take place. I liked specifically how he referenced the color of the furniture in the house, which was purple and violet. He also states how the chair that he sat in while he pondered the true intentions of the bird, was made of velvet. There were other clues like the silk purple curtains and the dreary night; if everything was brought together I formed an image of his chambers as being somewhat identical to those of the Christmas story, Scrooge. Maybe located somewhere in England, back in a time where the use of lamplight was the main form of electricity.
