The question of ethics has been pondered throughout history. Both religious and secular leaders and cultures have attempted to define ethical behavior. But, whether through belief in G – d or belief in a society of another sort, man has never satisfactorily answered the question of what is ethical. We can never know if our behavior is ethical, only believe it to be so from what we have learned from society and our ancestors. Culture extends to and affects all things; as we evolve, so too does the way we relate to the world and each other.

Therefore, even the notion of ethics, an unwritten, universal code for behavior, is a product of agreements, often tacit and subconscious, between the members of a culture; culture is, in turn, a function of the changes individual humans have undergone.

As stated by Ken Wilber, testosterone give men a “[screw] it or kill it” impulse. Therefore, when men were less evolved, taking whatever woman you wanted was all right. Men could not control those impulses, and so the ethics in such primitive societies are things to make us blanch. In later societies, if a man attempted to steal whatever woman he wanted, he could lose his life. Then, in the “glorious” medieval period, it was a noble’s prerogative to have whatever girl he wanted from within his demesne. Now, no matter how rich or powerful you are, it is considered unethical to attempt any such thing. We have even written laws that prohibit any actions society deems unethical.

Historically, ethics has changed many times over the years, with the rise and fall of various religions and secular regimes. For the Greeks, ethics was a very low priority (at least in our eyes). The Greek gods were philanderers, thieves and miscreants of all sorts, always squabbling amongst themselves. With the rise of more secular philosophy in ancient Greece, Socrates spread his theories that man could find anything through self – and world – reflection. He was followed by Plato, who taught that their were two kinds of knowledge: empirical, that is, testable, and that of reason. Any man who could find his own truths through “reason” had the right and duty to impose hi ideas on other men, because such thinkers were rare and special. Then came Aristotle, who taught that all such matters as ethics were universal truths, unchangeable by men. He taught that the best we could hope to do is discover those universal truths and practice them, thus becoming ethical people through the ethics programmed into ourselves.

In China, with Confucius, Chinese philosophy was more on the matter of social instead of individual ethics. If one found the Dao, or true path, de, or virtue, would follow as a result of finding this truth. Confucius taught that ethical codes existed from long before and were still applicable in his own time, and that the ethical codes determined an individual’s duty to his or her society.

Hindu ethics, largely expounded in the Upanishads, tended towards much more metaphysical pursuits, leaving the problems of an individual’s duty to other, and more secular texts such as Manu’s Law Books. Those codices laid down laws as to the social responsibilities of people of certain classes. Dharma, moral and social order, is a function of class. Depending on where you are in the social strata, your code of ethics was different.

Buddhism, founded by Siddharta Gautama, places great emphasis on the idea of simplicity. Buddhist ethics revolve almost completely around the motives for actions taken: if something is done for a bad reason, it is bad itself; if something is done for a good reason, it is good. However, the consequences of the actions also count. So, Buddhism espoused neither a “the ends justify the means” philosophy, nor a philosophy where only intentions count. Buddhism had only five core laws: abstain from killing and hurting living creatures; from stealing; from wrong indulgence in sensual pleasures; from lying; and from taking intoxicants.

The core belief of Jainism, another sect originating in India, is that all sentient life is sacred, and should be treated as such. Therefore, one should not harm any living thing, as all life has a purpose. Jainism also stressed truthfulness and disregard for material possessions.

Both Judaism and Christianity, while different in many fundamental ways not visible to many people, espouse a desire to be as close to G – d as possible. The way to achieve this, as taught by both religions, is through a strict moral code and humane treatment of all living things, especially humans. There are many other laws, but none as important as the ones detailing the interactions between individuals in a community and between people and G – d. There is no philosophy of simplicity, or of disregard for material possessions, or the belief that only extreme introspection can reveal the truths of the universe; at their cores, both Judaism and Christianity declare that the only way to know the truth is through the interaction of the body and spirit with G – d.

Islam stresses an absolute deference to the will of G – d, or Allah, that is subject to no interpretation by man, although there are several branches of Islam. The words of Allah, as heard and written by the prophet Muhammed, known as the Qu’uran or the Koran, provide the basis for moral order in Muslim life. One of the Muslim ideals, tied into the strong sense of culture and society created by the adherence to the words of the Qu’uran, stresses the redress of all social wrongs that impede devotion to Allah.

During the Renaissance a new philosophical system arose, that of Humanism. Humanism placed great emphasis on the deeds of the individual, without regard to metaphysical constructs such as G – d or the soul. Although the views of various humanists varied widely, from the belief that men were inherently good to the belief that men were inherently evil, they all believed that man and man alone was responsible for the good or evil in the world, whether through individual deeds or through the construction of, according to Rousseau, “inherently corrupt systems” like society.

Utilitarianism, expanded by both Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill, was the philosophical system that the only way to tell if an action was ethical or not was to observe the results empirically. Bentham said that an action was ethical if it caused the least pain and the most pleasure for the most people in the society. Mill, while agreeing that something that causes the most pleasure and the least amount of pain for the most people was a good thing, that not all questions of ethics could be solved that way; instead, society should adopt and uphold a common moral law instead of always judging by the absolutes of pain and pleasure. Mill believed this way because Bentham’s method left no room for people that were very different from others in society; Mill believed that such people were important to society.

Deontology, first championed by Immanuel Kant, states that being ethical can only be achieved by adherence to a standard set of compulsory morals; he stated that to find a moral law we should imagine ourselves on the wrong end of a ruling and expand morality from there.

Marxism, as theorized by Karl Marx, did not lay down a set of ethical laws, but rather dealt with ethics as a tool of the ruling class to oppress the working class.

Therefore, Marx believed that only when the working class was free of the ruler ship of the “bourgeoisie” could a real set of ethical laws be devised.

Existentialism, as laid down by Sartre, was the idea that all accepted conventions and rules, secular or religious, were false and the only person who could determine what was right was oneself. Sartre declared that all people have the freedom and responsibility to create themselves in whatever image they deem right, and whosoever does not take the freedom and responsibility was untrue to themselves. Sartre believed in no codes of ethics but those he could discern with his own intellect, and stated that the only way to find truth was to formulate and implement an idea and suffer whatever consequences may follow.

Post – Modernism deals with the idea that there are no universal truths, only human ideas that are no truer than any other human ideas, that truth is a totally relative thing. Even things like murder being wrong are subject to debate as a human truth, not a universal one, according to Post – Modernism. Even the ideas of free will and reason are not universal truths, but rather human truths because they are human constructs. Therefore, there is no wrong or right, but only what’s wrong or right for each separate person.

Social Ethics deals with the minimum requirements to balance social needs and individual needs. According to John Rawls, ethics is only a tool to achieve this balance, and should include liberty, acceptance of difference, and establishment of a basic protection against poverty. Alasdair MacIntyre, however, felt that ethics should concentrate less on individuals and their moral decisions and more on the community and its moral health and welfare. He felt we should focus more on what people should be rather than what they should do.

So, from the wide variety of opinion engendered in the many different philosophical systems regarding the idea of ethics, one can see that, though many different systems claim to have the truth about ethics and morality, not all can be. Ethics is the code detailing how an individual relates to a society, and while all of the philosophies throughout time have dealt with ethics in that wise, the explanations all differ so much that the only thing that can be told is that each culture where a specific idea about the truth of ethics originated influenced the originators.

Depression: A Critical Evaluation of Different Treatment Methods
Depressive disorders are commonly diagnosed in western cultures. Mood disorders impair individuals of all ages and gender, social, occupational and personal functioning (Olfson et al 2002). Causes of depression range from biological, psychological and social factors (Feldman & Feldman, 1997). In its mildest form depression may present as a passing period of sadness following a personal disappointment or loss (Burton, 2002). Clinical depression occurs when depressive symptoms persist for a long period of time and are severe enough to merit professional help (Burton). Depression is characterised by feelings of sadness, shame, guilt, anxiety, helplessness, and hopelessness, accompanied by symptoms such as insomnia, loss of energy, enthusiasm, poor self-image, changes in appetite, and for some, thoughts of suicide (Feldman & Feldman). This essay evaluates three treatments of depression in adults: psychotherapy, pharmacotherapy, and group treatments. Research evidence indicates that each modality has particular strengths and weaknesses. It will argue that whilst these treatments are effective, an integration of both psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy are complementary treatments for depression (Feldman & Feldman).

Psychotherapy is the treatment of emotional disorders by psychological means. It involves the verbal interaction between a trained professional therapist and a patient with emotional or behavioural problems. Using non-drug techniques based on established psychological principles, the therapist helps the patient identify and change maladaptive thoughts, feelings, and behaviour or adjust to problems in living (Rathus, 2002).

Types of psychotherapy have proved effective in the treatment for depression for individuals, couples, and groups, targeting the underlying factors associated with depression (Feldman & Feldman, 1997). Comparative efficacy research indicates that Cognitive, Interpersonal, and Behaviour Therapy are effective treatments for depression, particularly when symptoms are mild or moderate in severity (Beach, Whisman, & O’Leary, 1994; Hollon, 1993; Karasu, 1994; Scogin & McElreath, 1994, as cited in Feldman & Feldman).

Cognitive therapy focuses on cognitive functioning by helping clients alter irrational thinking and beliefs. Techniques encompass challenging irrational thoughts and cognitions to reduce depressive symptoms, by generating more productive and accurate thoughts, reducing emotional stress (Feldman & Feldman, 1997).

Alternatively Interpersonal therapy enhances understanding in relationships using empathy skills to allow clients grief and loss issues to be resolved (Feldman & Feldman, 1997). Another technique, Behaviour therapy aims to change behaviour by building coping strategies and appropriate social skills (Feldman & Feldman).

According to Feldman and Feldman (1997) cognitive, behaviour and interpersonal therapies are limited when depressive symptoms are severe. Especially when significant disturbances of sleep, appetite, or concentration exist (Elkin et al., 1989; Robinson, Berman, & Neimeyer, 1990; Thase et al., 1994 as cited in Feldman & Feldman). Therapists are unable to engage patients who are too tired, dominated by obsessional thinking or consumed with feelings of hopelessness (Feldman & Feldman). Furthermore, depending on the client’s ability for example, cognitive therapy is limited for intellectually impaired people.

Another treatment option is Pharmacotherapy, which uses medication as the primary intervention for treating patients. As depression maybe a biological disorder it often requires medication to overcome chemical imbalances to stabilise moods. Drug therapies such as tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) or Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI’s) have proved effective in treating depression (Kennedy, Lam, Cohen, Rowindran & Canmat, 2001). In most instances it takes one to three weeks before the benefits of medication become apparent, relieving depressive symptoms such as sleep or appetite disturbance, fatigue, concentration difficulties, irritability, and obsessional thinking (Feldman & Feldman 1997).

Up until the 1990s, TCAs were the most frequently prescribed antidepressants (Ainsworth, 2000). However, in a review article Ainsworth (2000) points out the potential side effects of tricyclic antidepressants. Side effects can include dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, dizziness, increased appetite and weight gain, sleep disturbance, high blood pressure, severe headaches, strokes and even death (Ainsworth). Sexual side effects have commonly included low libido and orgasm or ejaculatory impairment (Kennedy, Lam, Cohen, Ravindran & CANMAT, 2001). Moreover, TCAs are often common agents used in suicide by poisoning (Ainsworth). SSRIs are a newer, safer antidepressant. However side effects can include; agitation, sleep disruption, nausea, weight gain and sexual problems (Kennedy et al.).

Research indicates depressive relapse can also occur when treatment is stopped (Greden, 1993; Rush, 1993 as cited in Mundt, Clark, Burroughs, Brenneman & Griest, 2001). However, inadequate dose, duration and medication compliance is often the cause of relapse (Katzelnick, Kobak, Jefferson, Greist & Henk, 1996, as cited in Mundt et al.). Patients may stop medication due to the lessening of depressive symptoms, side effects, costs, and peer pressure (Mundt et al.).

A study involving two hundred forty-six depressed outpatients, claimed successful treatment of depression of seventy percent of patients who complied with treatment (Mundt et al., 2001). Participants were prescribed antidepressants and randomly received educational materials by mail. These patients were assessed at baseline, four, twelve, and thirty weeks later for depressive severity and functional impairment. Medication compliance was analysed by prescription fill date and results indicated that medical compliance is crucial to the effectiveness of pharmacotherapy (Mundt et al.).

A comparison of surveys in the United States between 1987 and 1997 indicate greater use and tolerance of newer antidepressants versus psychotherapy treatment (Olfson et al., 2002). Participants were outpatients who had one or more visits for depression (Olfson et al.). Outcome measures were based on rate of treatment, psychotropic medication, use, psychotherapy, number of visits, type of service and payment (Olfson et al.). However alternative explanations of these findings show that pharmacotherapy is a faster, easier and cheaper alternative to psychotherapy. Results indicate third-party payment coverage, faster methods of diagnosing depression and accessibility of antidepressants in clinical practice (Olfson et al.). These results are valid but limited due to these findings. Therefore pharmacotherapy as a single modality to psychotherapy has no advantage.

Group treatment is an alternative approach to pharmacological therapy, often employing psychotherapy intervention, in a supportive, sharing environment. Group treatments vary in size and structure involving a small number of participants, a facilitator and co-facilitator. Structured groups emphasise learning using cognitive and behavioural interventions, or alternatively less structured groups offer a supportive environment for participants struggling with depression (Rice, 2001).

Past research indicates group treatments are an effective modality for the treatment of depression (Lewinsohn, Steinmetz, Antonuccio, & Teri, 1985; Marshall & Mazie, 1987; Neimeyer & Feixas, 1990; Teri & Lewinsohn, 1986; Yost, 1986, as cited in Rice, 2001). While recent study indicates the effectiveness of psychotherapeutic group treatments for depression in comparison to pharmacological therapy alone (Rice).

Rice (2001) did a comparative study using three group treatments. One group used a structural treatment model, another group used alterative group therapy and a control group was medicated while on a waiting list (Rice). Groups were compared using seven outcome measures on fifty-nine participants at an outpatient community mental health centre (Rice). Participants consisted of middle-aged, isolated, unemployed single women in severe depression (Rice). Outcomes for the treatment groups showed an improvement in symptoms. The structured group improved on five of the seven measures compared to the controlled wait-list, while the alternative group improved on only two (Rice). The depressive symptoms of the control wait-list group although medicated (using pharmacotherapy) deteriorated during the study (Rice).

The effectiveness of the structured group appears to have been more beneficial as cognitive and behavioural interventions were used. These interventions addressed depressive thinking patterns and problematic interpersonal relationships (Rice, 2001). Participants learnt relaxation and social skills, and to engage in more pleasant activities. Whereas the alternative brief group although beneficial only offered support, sharing and emotional encouragement (Rice). Whilst group treatment appears to be beneficial for depression, this study is limited as participants only represent a minority of the population who benefited by the social contact the group provided (Rice). However findings indicate age or work did not contribute to the differences in outcome measures (Rice). Results indicate that medication without group work or psychotherapy is not effective (Rice).

All group treatments appear effective by reducing general distress levels and providing social contact. However, educational group treatments are more effective in reducing depressive thinking patterns and interpersonal relationships. Research indicates group treatments increase self-esteem, social contact and perceived support lead to a reduction in levels of depression and associated symptoms (Evans & Connis, 1995; Piper, McCallum, & Azim, 1992, as cited in Rice, 2001). However group treatment may be unsuitable for uncooperative clients and those who cannot work with others. Furthermore, depressed clients are often unmotivated to attend group therapy and may need pharmacotherapy to relieve depressive symptoms. Group treatment is therefore an effective treatment for depression, but further research needs to look at a wider cross-section of the population and include follow-up research for short-term or long-term effectiveness.

Studies agree Psychotherapy, Pharmacotherapy and Group treatments are effective modalities for depression. Psychotherapy whether individual or group treatment offers client-healing relationships, encourages client insight and change from maladaptive thoughts, feelings and behaviour (Feldman & Feldman, 1997). However, individual (psychotherapy) and group treatments are best suited to low or moderate depression. Nevertheless effectiveness is dependent on client choice and suitability. Pharmacotherapy is an effective approach to the treatment of depressive symptoms. However, given the negative side effects pharmacotherapy is suitable for short-term treatment furthermore does not address underlying psychological factors. Therefore the best approach would be an integration of psychotherapy or group treatment and pharmacotherapy, as the strengths of each approach strengthen and enhance the potency of the others (Feldman & Feldman).

The events of September 11th have substantially affected the immigration laws. Naturally the response of the United States had to be severe, including changes from the outside and within. We should not allow these changes to affect principles of our country. The laws that the government have set are direct breeches of the constitution, and will change the American standards of living. The United States has always welcomed immigrants with open arms and these events should not affect that.

After we learned that some of the suspected terrorists were students in legal status we had to expect a cry for change in immigration laws. The nationwide effort to gain control over immigration includes heightened border security and new restrictions on visa holders. For people entering the country this means more scrutiny with more questions being asked about their motives in coming here. Immigrant citizens and green card holders may face scrutiny simply because they are immigrants and suddenly, often unfairly, are subject to new prejudices stemming from terrorism. The most likely target of these prejudices will be the Arabs and Muslims. Many have already been arrested, detained and deported under these guidelines. These unfair prejudices may effect immigration as immigrants may feel uncomfortable in our country. Therefore, with this legislative reform the immigrants affected are not only the “bad ones”, but also the “good ones”, immigrants with honest intentions who appreciate America.

The governments first priority is to prevent future terrorist attacks. The Patriot Act is their attempt to protect innocent Americans from the deadly plans of terrorists dedicated to destroying the American way of life. In the attempt to protect its people this act allows government agencies to basically spy on its own citizens. The law allows searches to examine, photograph and copy material but not to seize property.

Many innocent people’s privacy can be legally invaded due to this rule. Civil rights activists see this as unconstitutional and are fighting for reform. Federal agents can also tap any telephone used by a suspect including “roving” wiretaps. This gives agents the right to put a wiretap on a cellular telephone of anyone who they feel is a potential suspect. Officials can track all outgoing and incoming e-mails from a computer of a suspected criminal. These laws give officials the right to intrude the privacy of the people of our country so they can “listen in” on basically all forms of communication. The act allows disclosure of confidential grand jury evidence to intelligence and immigration officers. The government can also detain noncitizens for up to seven days based on reasonable suspicion that they are involved in terrorism or threaten national security. Many immigrants will be wrongfully detained due to a small infraction they may have had in the past. These innocent immigrants can be held in jail for committing no crime. As all of these rules seem necessary to some, others see the provisions as violations of their privacy. The government is showing that they are willing to bend human rights standards when they feel the US national security is at risk. As these rules will no doubt help the fight against terrorism they may also affect many innocent immigrants trying to earn an honest living.

Illegal immigrants have always been in violation of the law, but most were able to get away with staying here. New crackdowns include deportation of these immigrants changing life for them as well. Right now there are 7-11 million undocumented illegal immigrants living in the United States. Most of them come from struggling countries and are here earn a living and take advantage of the financial status of our country. Most of these people would like to be legal citizens but they refuse to wait through the rigorous process to gain citizenship. These immigrants obtain many jobs that are needed for our country to run properly. Under the new rules enforced by the Patriot act and other acts, these people will be found and deported back to their countries. It will be almost impossible for these immigrants to gain legal citizenship after this offense. They will return despite this and continue to live here illegally to earn themselves an honest living. As these laws affect immigration they will affect the way the country is ran as well. Money will be lost and the economy will be effected as the immigration rate declines. The jobs that are usually obtained by immigrants will be lost and these jobs will be in high demand.

With these new rules in effect the immigration rate will almost defiantly decline. The track to gain citizenship will be longer more rigorous and potential immigrants will most likely give up. As immigration decreases these countries may become offended as they welcome our immigrants and we decline theirs. This may affect international affairs such as the trade. As these countries lose respect for the United States they may refuse to engage in trade agreements. This will raise the prices of many necessary goods and will have a negative impact on our economy.

The Bush administration is undoubtedly feeling vulnerable, especially with the 2004 elections around the corner. Bush is not as popular as he once was. In Bush’s debates of the 2000 election he mentioned the use of secret evidence and racial profiling which earned him many Arab-American votes. Bush’s popularity throughout the Arab-American population has decreased greatly in his decisions in dealing with the terror issue. The administration is making the “war on terror” look more like a war on immigration as immigrants are receiving most of the impact. The administration is touting this “war on terror” as a success although the main impact has been on immigration. True there has not been a major terrorist attack in the US since 2001, but this may be mainly due to the action being taken against Al-Qaeda. Since the U.S has gone in and captured or killed most of the leadership in this organization this obviously will stop or at least slow down terrorist activity for a while.

Although the government feels obligated to enforce stricter immigration rules they should not allow these rules to dramatically affect the foundation of our country. Instead of protecting its people from terrorism these laws have prohibited the country from immigration. Immigration has been a part of our country since the beginning of our independence and is a leading factor in what makes our country so great. The diversity found in the United States is greater then any other country which is what makes us so unique. These new immigration rules will directly effect the basis of what has made our country so great. In the governments attempt to try and protect our country they have changed the principles which make us who we are.

Just imagine your child was diagnosed of having autism. The realization of your child perhaps being autistic may be lurid. You now know that your child will be found with many challenges, and may have a severe difficulty making sense of the world. Autism is an illness that can affect your communication, socialization, intelligence, and you may act in many unusual behaviors. To try to help an autistic child is being very courageous. Having a child will who is autistic will be a struggle throughout both of your lives.

Autism can be described in many ways. Autism medically, is a neurological disorder, which can affect the brain from trying to properly function normally. Autism is always a childhood disorder. It is where a child is in his own world. This may be very difficult for the average person to understand. Autistic children will have a problem demonstrating many special skills like socializing, communicating, and using their sensory system. Some call autism an information processing disorder. Autism should be known that it is not a disorder that a child can catch or create. It is a neurological brain disorder that is inborn. The child will differ in many ways of a normal average person. The major issue that devastates parents is that the child will most likely not be able to make sense of the world. I think what a mother once, said is an example of how difficult this disorder can be, for the child and the parent. She said “ we start with an image-a tiny, golden child on hands and knees, circle in ground and round a spot on the floor in mysterious self-absorbed delight. She does not look up, though she is smiling and laughing; she does not call our attention to the mysterious object of her pleasure. She does not see us at all. She and the spot are all there is, and thought she is eighteen months old, an age for touching, tasting, pointing, pushing, exploring, she is doing none of these.”

Throughout the years and into the future, the causes of autism are unknown. Scientists and people in the medical world all have their own hypothesis and idea about the disorder. But the opinion of so many researchers and physicians around the world are very mixed. Many believe the origin may be genetics. Many should know that the external environment can not cause autism. The major majority should know that every scientist knows that autism is not caused by bad or poor parenting. The hypothesis by many is genetics, over the years with the progression of genetics and DNA it is very possible. Scientists have done prior studies and will continue in the next couple of years. If you think your child may have autism, they always advise parents to see their physician. About 20-40% of autistic children that have an IQ of fewer than 50 may start having seizures before adolescence. They start to behave in many bizarre mechanisms. The child may also be diagnosed with tourette’s syndromes, obsessive compulsive disorder, or hyperactivity. People in the medical field say that a school can be very beneficial to your child. The classroom can clear expectations, goals, and learning experiences for the child. There are many progressions and organizations that will help your child be able to deal with life. There are not just learning deficits in an autistic child, there also many daily things like bathing, and eating that a child with autism may need help with. The most important thing to realize is there is help and hope for you and your child.

In short, there is also another point of view that disregards a lot of what people think autism is caused by. One thing Americans should know is that autism is one of a number of children’s neurological disorders of psychogenic nature, which means that autism can be caused by abusive and traumatic treatment of infants. Another view of the cause of autism is that in Europe many researchers performed post mortem examinations of autistic children who died from other causes. They recognized damage to their brains. The damage to young children can be manifested in psychomotor delay, ataxia, speech problems and seizures. The moral of the point of view of many other people in the medical field and researchers of autism is that there is a mounting amount of scientific evidence suggesting denial by the American society that the causes of damage to millions of these children, is that they were traumatized, and consequence brain damage because of cruel treatment by parents who are otherwise too busy to love and care for their babies. This again is another point of view of why children are diagnosed with autism. Many parents and physicians dismissed the evidence, but it is very scientifically true.

There is now a lot of research being done by genetics, DNA, and vaccines for autism. Around the world, scientists are trying to find the causes of autism, to try to invent a vaccine to cure autism. Researchers are started to pain a picture by how the chromosomes might be getting altered or mutated for the birth of the infant. But, researches and scientists, I believe, in the next couple of years will find out.

Learning about the subject remains a continuous process. In the future, there will be many new therapies, medications, and alternative medications and treatments hopefully in the next couple of years to help your child. Parents are really the best teacher for their child. Autism has been diagnosed to many children in the last year. Scientists feel there has to be a reason why this illness occurs, especially in infants. It might take months, years, or a century. But someday we will be able to overcome the autistic disorder.

This paper will discuss a particular hardware that is on the market today, which is computer wireless network. Moreover, it will go in depth as to what exactly wireless networking entails, how to configure your computer for wireless networking and some advantages and disadvantages associated with wireless networking so potential users could possible determine if this type of hardware is one that would be suitable for their use.

I would like to discuss what wireless networking entails, how it works and some advantages and disadvantages associated with the hardware.

To begin with, computer wireless networking is basically the ability to link multiple computer systems in a household together without any wires. One may wonder how this could be possible, and this will be discussed later on in this paper. At any rate, this type of technology could be proven useful in a household with a lot of computer users to even a single household user with a desktop PC and a laptop. It all depends on frequency of use for the system, which now and days majority of households depend on computer technology in one way or another.

Currently there are four types of wireless networks available: Bluetooth, IrDA, HomeRF (SWAP), and WECA (Wi-Fi). The difference between them is the range from slow and inexpensive to fast and expensive. Bluetooth is not readily available on the market and WECA (Wi-Fi) is mostly used in offices instead of homes because it is expensive and complicated to set up (How wireless networking works). Keep in mind that that software access points do not limit the type or number or interface users, so a firewall should be established to prevent unauthorized users from accessing the computer system.

The range of the wireless network varies depending on the environment. Most systems will be accessible within a reasonable distance, both in and outdoors. It is important to keep in mind that the greater the range use, the performance will tend to drop and the quality connection will also deteriorate. Typical ranges are between 150 and 300 feet indoors, but can be shortened depending on the building structure. Outdoor ranges have been known to reach up to 1000 feet, but once again it is dependant upon the environment. There are ways to extend the range by using more than a single access port or a wireless relay.

Consequently some of the advantages of disadvantages associated with computer wireless networking will be overall dependant on the need of the user. Although I have briefly mentioned a few that should be considered by any user. Once again, the cost factor and efficiency and speed of the system could be the driving factors for some as they were certainly for me.

In conclusion, as a wireless network user I enjoy the freedom of being able to use my laptop at various locations throughout my household. Once again, wireless technology is made possible by radio waves in between the different computer terminals. Thus the hassle wire connections have become a thing of the past. When considering a wireless connection, one must keep in mind that there are a few technologies available to select from. They essentially vary from different speeds and price range. Regardless of what system is used safe computing is a must.

The popularity of tattooing has increased dramatically, especially with teenagers. Tattooing has been a fad for centuries and teenagers are now starting to take on this so called form of art. Though teenagers feel that getting a tattoo is the in thing to do, it is in fact along term problem. The increasing of tattooing done by teenagers is because of rebellion, peer pressure, and social status.

Rebellion is one of the many reasons why teenagers get tattoos. The children of today want to use piercing and tattoos as a form of expression and independence. The problem with this is that parents do not feel the same way, and so teenagers go out and get a tattoo in a ways just to show their parents that they can do as they please, and that they are not the bosses of them.

The problem with this is that later on in life the child that got the tattoo will grow up and have children of their own, who will also want to get a tattoo or other means of expression done on their body. The teenager who is now a parent will most likely tell them no, but just like they did when they were younger, their children will also still probably go out and get a tattoo. How is the parent going to explain that it is not the right time for it, if they themselves got one also at that age?

Tattoos such as the teardrop underneath the eye are to show that they have shot and/or killed someone. The more teardrops underneath the eyes, and the more things that they do for their gang, the more tattoos they get on their bodies. For them tattoos are like badges of honor. The main problem with this is that they get all of these tattoos just to prove their loyalty to their gang. What if later on in life they want to quit and get a real job in society? The tattoos on their arms and face will not go over very well with the employers. The chances of them getting professional business careers are slim to none, depending on the type of career or job.

So for the most part the main reasons teenagers are getting tattoos are because of rebellion, peer pressure, and social status, but teenagers are not thinking of the consequences. Tattoos are permanent and we have to remember that. For some reason or another, if later on in life the teenager does not want their tattoo or tattoos it is going to be real difficult and expensive to get rid of them.

Cystic Fibrosis is a very serious inherited genetic disease which affects one child in every 2,500 Caucasian births. This terrible disease usually affects the lungs and causes the build up of a thick mucus which causes chest infections. These infections unfortunately usually lead to death during childhood or early adulthood. On occasion, besides affecting the lungs, it affects the bowels and the pancreas, causing blockages in the intestines and poor absorption of food.

Cystic Fibrosis may first appear in a newly born baby, or in children or young adults. However, 7-10% of cases are apparent at birth. These newborns are born with “meconium ileus.” Meconium is a dark, sticky, putty-like material found in all children at birth. Normally, meconium is dissolved in a few days after enzymes from the pancreas act upon it. Cystic Fibrosis, however, causes a deficiency in the enzymes and the meconium builds up. Eventually it must be removed surgically. Older children and young adults who have Cystic Fibrosis usually suffer from four types of symptoms: gastrointestinal, pulmonary, sweat glands, and reproductive.

Genes are the main cause of Cystic Fibrosis. We inherit a complete set of genes from each parent, which results in pairs of genes. Every parent either contributes a normal gene or a mutated gene. Gene pairs, then, can consist of two mutated genes, two normal genes, or one mutated gene and one normal gene. Because the affected gene (found on the number 7 chromosome) is a recessive gene, one must inherit two copies of the affected gene in order to have the disease. If you inherit only one affected gene than you will not have Cystic Fibrosis but you will be a ‘carrier’. One in twenty Caucasians are carriers of Cystic Fibrosis.

Almost 90% of Cystic Fibrosis cases are caused by a mutation called DeltaF508. The mutation involves a missing amino acid called phenylalanine. The mutated genes cannot manufacture a protein called CFTR (cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator) correctly. The CFTR protein allows chloride ions to exit mucus producing cells and for water molecules to follow the chloride ions out. When the process is normal, mucus is of normal consistency. However, when chloride ions are trapped and water cannot escape, mucus becomes thick and sticky. The result is the disease we call cystic fibrosis.

Scientists do not know what the exact function of the CF gene is. However, they do know that defects in the gene result in the abnormal transport of salt and water across the cells in the lungs, pancreas, and bowels. This means that the mucus secretions normally produced by these cells are salty and very thick. The very thick mucus causes blockages in the bronchial tubes. This interferes with breathing and traps bacteria in the lungs. The bacteria in the lungs promote infection.

Unfortunately, the mucus in a Cystic Fibrosis patient’s lung provides a favorable environment for some types of bacteria that don’t usually affect healthy people. Like the lungs, CF also affects the narrow ducts of the pancreas, which secretes enzymes that digest food into the bowel, which become blocked by mucus. The mucus prevents important digestive enzymes from reaching the small intestine. This causes malabsorption syndrome. Malabsorption syndrome affects eighty-five percent of CF patients. Therefore, they require an energy-dense diet high in protein, fats, and vitamins. This diet usually consists of one and a half times the usually caloric content of a normal person. In addition, people with CF do not get the benefits of pancreatic enzymes, and pancreatic enzyme supplements must be taken along with meals. These enzymes are taken orally. Patients also receive additional A, D, E and K vitamins. Poor absorption also hinders patients’ ability to gain weight and to grow normally. However, the most serious impact of Cystic Fibrosis is still breathing.

Doctors can recognize Cystic Fibrosis by testing the salt content of the sweat; it is much higher in people with the disease. A chest X-ray and tests of the lung function will usually be undertaken. If chest infections occur frequently, a sample of sputum (phlegm) will be analyzed for the presence of bacteria. When Cystic Fibrosis is detected the patient has many treatment options. The overall aim of treatments are to treat infections, keep the lungs clean and free of sputum, maintain adequate nutrition, and to improve airflow.

When treating infections, antibiotics are used to combat the bacteria. For mild or moderate infections, antibiotics can be given in tablets, capsules, and liquids. If the infection is very severe, the patient may have to go to the hospital so the antibiotics can be administered there intravenously. Often antibiotics are given in an aerosol mist from an aerosol inhaler or nebulizer.

Cystic Fibrosis patients also require bronchodilator medications. Bronchodilators aide in opening up airways by helping move secretions within the lungs. The third type of medication is a mucolitic agent, Pulmozyme. Pulmozyme acts upon the DNA in sputum and breaks it down into a non-sticky liquid. It does not cure Cystic Fibrosis but it helps reduce lung infections and the need for antibiotics.

All Cystic Fibrosis patients have a higher amount of mucus in their lungs which makes Air Clearance Therapies (a form of chest physiotherapy) a good treatment. It is very important for patients to clear the thick secretions from the lungs. Patients who practice air clearance therapy at least once a day have a better long term lung function and less permanent damage.

A new type of therapy which may offer new hope for people suffering from Cystic Fibrosis is called gene therapy. Gene therapy is still, however, undergoing clinical trials. The overall idea of gene therapy is to make a normal version of the gene that is affected in Cystic Fibrosis and deliver it into the cells of the lungs and to restore their normal function. It is not a permanent treatment but the results of the trials seem to be promising. Most treatments that are used to alleviate symptoms of CF such as physiotherapy and antibiotics can be done at home which reduces the time a patient must stay in the hospital.

Eleven years ago in 1989, scientists made a remarkable discovery when they discovered the gene that is responsible for CF. When searching for the gene that cause the disease Dr. Lap-Chee Tsui said, “Looking for a cystic fibrosis gene was like looking for a house between New York and Los Angeles without a street address”. Even though it was difficult to find, the discovery of the CF gene has helped scientists enormously in uncovering the secrets of CF. His discovery helped doctors and scientists to understand cystic fibrosis’s affects on the body and will lead to the discovery of many more treatments and possibly a cure. Cystic Fibrosis is important to the scientific community as well as humanity because there is no cure and people are continuing to die. Scientists must continue to experiment with new treatments and techniques in order to someday, cure CF.

The first time we see Jay Gatsby he is standing on the shore of a bay reaching out to a green light in the distance. At this moment, without having any knowledge of his past, Fitzgerald allows us to analyze so much about his character. The description of the light as green is not merely coincidental, but it is rather symbolic. The green light sets a tone for the rest of the book.

Fitzgerald is mostly interested in all the consequences associated with wealth, symbolically represented by the color green. In Gatsby’s case it is blindly pursuing the lovely and wealthy Daisy, whom he dreams of having. His ideal life would be to have her for himself. Gatsby’s dream is his sole reason for living. The green light happens to be at the end of Daisy’s dock, which he is reaching out to, showing how he is motioning the dream to come towards him. Gatsby is fishing in his ideal vision of a rich life along with his longtime illusion, Daisy. Fitzgerald sets the tone for the book focusing on the consequences Gatsby attains for pursuing wealth.

The green light is placed accordingly at the end of Daisy’s dock, and represents the dream Gatsby wishes to come true. He is depicted as reaching out toward the green light. “...-he stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and as far as I was from him I could have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced seaward-and distinguished nothing except a single green light.”(P.25) This image shows Gatsby’s desire of obtaining his dream, in the way that he is almost dragging it in with his hands, which move in a curious way. The dark water represents, in one’s opinion, a sea of dreary doom. This doom is awaiting him on the path to ‘reaching’ his dream. Gatsby doesn’t realize the tragedy that awaits him on account of his foolishness. Gatsby is like many other Americans who want to strike gold, but in the end the treasure ends up being a trap. Lives end in destruction when wealth is used for selfish and unpurposeful reasons, such as Gatsby ‘buying’ over Daisy to reach what he thinks is a dream, but is in fact an illusion.

Gatsby’s whole life has been a journey focusing on tempting Daisy with his wealth to come to him. Gatsby confuses eternal wealth with love, which is why he believes he is in love with Daisy. Gatsby loves what she represents, money, not who she is. This promise of eternal wealth is what draws Gatsby in closer every day. Their so-called love for each other is an illusion, which is why Fitzgerald only focuses on the downfall of their ‘relationship’ rather than the details of their affair. Gatsby can’t see past the materialistic aspect of their affair, and Daisy is one in the same.

Gatsby once remarks, “Her voice is full of money.”(P.127) Money is shown once again to be the only purpose for him to achieve his dream. Money blinds his eyes, and forces him to not take notice of anything else. All of the qualities that make up Daisy are directly connected to money. “It was full of money – that was the inexhaustible charm that rose and fell in it, the jingle of it, the cymbal’s song of it...High in a white palace the king’s daughter, the golden girl....”(P.127)

Daisy is compared only enchanted qualities. Gatsby sees ‘a voice full of money” and a rich man’s little girl. Daisy is the beautiful rich girl, the golden girl, which is at the center of a poor boy’s dream. She lives in an enchanted palace and waits for her prince charming to come sweep her up off her feet; at least this is what Gatsby imagines.

In order to have her he too must be wealthy, and the revelation of his wealth is all due to wanting Daisy. Not only is Gatsby disillusioned by Daisy’s wealth, but Daisy herself is disillusioned by Gatsby’s wealth as well.

Daisy is only attracted to the immense wealth, which blinds her eyes, that Jay Gatsby has accumulated, and nothing more personal. Daisy refers to Gatsby as an advertisement man; “You resemble the advertisement of the man,”. (P.125) Today advertising only promotes the purchase of materialistic items. This shows Daisy’s love as an illusion as well as Gatsby’s, because she believes that he is just yet another possession in the world she wants to buy. She doesn’t need it, but wants it. She wants to have Gatsby, because of all the material possessions that come along with him. Daisy’s fascination with his possessions reveals her obsession with wealth. “With enchanting murmurs Daisy admired this aspect or that of feudal silhouette against the sky, admired the gardens, the sparkling odor of jonquils and the frothy odor of hawthorn and plum blossoms and the pale gold odor of kiss-me-at-the-gate.”(P.96) Daisy is thrilled over the enchanted and rich possessions. Fitzgerald uses elaborate detail to display the rich atmosphere Daisy admires so much. Little objects are described with rich detail, in order to show that every object has a value in Daisy’s eyes. Each and every possession pulls a curtain in front of her eyes, that allows her to nothing else except the money set before her. She cannot see who Gatsby really is, so she isn’t able to love him on the more personal aspect. Daisy even cries over how many beautiful shirts Gatsby owns. “ They’re such beautiful shirts,” she sobbed, her voice muffled in the thick folds. “It makes me sad because I’ve never seen such beautiful shirts before.”(P.98) Daisy is obsessed with money and what it can buy a person. This is why Daisy pursues Gatsby finally, because he practically has become his money. Gatsby’s tour through his mansion is what really draws Daisy close to him.

The tour of the mansion completes Gatsby’s dream or ideal vision. After the tour is finished Gatsby has no goal to conquer or work for. Gatsby’s whole life has been based around a single dream. He has finally made his dream come true, and now he has no where to go from there. Gatsby’s character is seen as going downhill from the second that he reaches his dream. “He had been full of the idea so long, dreamed it right through to the end, waited with his teeth set so to speak, at an inconceivable pitch of intensity. Now, in the reaction, he was running down like an overwound clock.”(P.97) This shows Gatsby isn’t relying on the past times anymore, because he is living his dream in the present. From the second he knows he has Daisy his life declines. Nick describing him as an overwound clock only shows the countdown towards his self-destruction. Gatsby’s life goes downhill because he does not use his wealth for anything other than the destruction of his own life.

Gatsby’s car is an extension of the symbolic reference to his wealth. This car is yet another symbolic reference to wealth of the typical American. A car is an expensive item most people buy in America. This car Gatsby has leads to his death. Daisy, a careless driver, drives this car at one time, and drives over Myrtle. Tom tells Wilson that the car that killed Myrtle belongs to Gatsby. This is what provokes Wilson to kill Gatsby. Fitzgerald strikes at the point that there are consequences of one’s actions. He doesn’t realize that money won’t completely win over Daisy. Although money is one of the qualities that make Daisy who she is, there are still other ‘personal’ aspects about her character, which is why she keeps her relationship with Tom. Gatsby describes Tom and Daisy’s relationship as personal; “In any case, it was just personal.”(P.160) This reflects that Jay Gatsby bases love solely on money. In this case Gatsby is punished for using his wealth for materialistic reasons. This use of his wealth to make his dream come true is the reason for his death. Fitzgerald reveals Gatsby’s consequences to pursuing money. Gatsby reaches his dream, but his life went downhill from that time on.

The last time we see Jay Gatsby he is floating on a mattress in his pool with ripples of blood and dead leaves around him. The autumn leaves symbolically apply to the death of Gatsby along with his dream. In the beginning of the book Gatsby is reaching out to the green light, which gives him hope and promise for a dream come true. The end of the book shows how his dream based, strictly on the foundation of wealth, is destroyed by reality.

And as I sat there, brooding on the old unknown world, I thought of Gatsby’s wonder when he first picked out the green light at he end of Daisy’s dock. He had come a long way to this blue lawn and his dream must have seemed so close that he could hardly fail to grasp it. He did not know that it was already behind him, somewhere back in that vast obscurity beyond the city, where the dark fields of the republic rolled on under the night.(P.189)

Gatsby is disillusioned by the fact that his dream has already been shattered by reality ages ago, and all he is doing is chasing after a dream that is already gone and lost forever. He could see, almost smell, his dream at hand, which is what provoked him to keep on trying to achieve his life long goal of having Daisy. The green light gave him the hope and promise that he may once obtain his dream. Gatsby kept the hope and promise of the green light close to his heart just as, “the old island that flowered once for Dutch sailor’s eyes-a fresh green breast of the New World.”(P.189) The green light is compared to the green breast of the New World. Both are in reference to the hope and promise of a woman, which is why the green light is at the end of a woman’s dock, and the New World, is described as a green breast. Both uses of green unite hope and promise with a typical American’s dream. Gatsby’s life is based on a single dream; once this dream is reached there is nothing left to conquer. Gatsby’s pursues wealth to make a dream come true, which is the cause for the destruction that takes place in his life. The color green parallels the wealth Gatsby strives for and the consequences of pursuing wealth: in his case death.

Freud was the first psychotherapist to discover that the order of one’s birth is directly related to their personality. Every child acts differently due to the attention they receive from their parents, siblings, family, friends, and society. Even though children are born into the same family, researchers have found that there are strengths, as well as weaknesses inbuilt in each birth position.

The first child is like a first love that can never be duplicated. They are the focus of the parents hopes and dreams, which molds the child into what is known as the “first child syndrome.” Because of the close relationship with their parents, the first born receives in full force their love, standards, attitudes and values. The first child syndrome focuses on achievement and success. They feel extremely obligated to fulfill their parents dreams of them succeeding. The oldest children are the highest achievers in society and have the highest IQ‘s. They are often very serious about their achievements and highly motivated to be successful. Their great need to succeed causes them the greatest educational success and the fewest academic problems. New siblings can have both a positive and negative effect on the oldest child. Due to younger siblings the oldest becomes more independent. Also, the birth of siblings makes transitions easier for the first born. However, the oldest child often feels abandoned by it’s mother when a new baby is brought home for the first time. Although there are many strong points to being the oldest, there are also some downfalls. Because parents focus all their hopes and dreams on their first born, these children often feel pressured to do well. Oldest children also have a fear of rejection and not succeeding in life. Therefore, the firstborn’s childhood shapes their personality.

Many times, because the middle child is not “perfect” like the older sibling, or “cute” like the younger one, he/she may feel ignored by their family. Within their family, middle children are often loners and avoid being compared with their siblings. They feel like they have no reason to exist. Their older sibling receives attention for doing so well and their younger sibling receives attention for being “the baby,” while they receive no attention at all. Almost always the middle child feels caught between not having the privileges the older sibling has, and yet having to be the more mature one when dealing with the younger child. Therefore, they must somehow develop their own identity, different from both of their siblings. The second born may be a pleaser in order to gain their parents attention and approval. But at the same time they can be an antagonizer, as they try to irritate others to be noticed. In any aspect, the middle child tries to be extremely different from their siblings, but with a need for attention. Socially the middle child flourishes. They are usually very popular and well-liked by others. Unlike, their older sibling they put their social life ahead of their academics. In school they thrive to be noticed as they participate in sports and other school activities; in this way they feel accepted by their schoolmates as they are involved. The lack of attention given by their family causes them a sense of feeling unnoticed; this follows with the child throughout their adulthood. Many middle children are described as having a “balanced“ or “well-adjusted“ personality. Both these personalities are caused by the fact that they do not need their parents approval by adulthood. Middle children are not used to always getting their way and not having parents all to themselves, thus causing them to be extremely proficient at negotiating and compromising. Even though at times middle children feel like the “black sheep” of the family, their social life flourished and they usually develop into an outgoing, well-liked person.

The youngest child is always treated like the baby of family, thus acting in that manner throughout their life. The extra attention given to the “baby” develops their childish personality. Because their family has catered to them throughout their life, the youngest is usually spoiled and dependent on others. Youngests often expect, and get, help from others even without asking. They just look helpless causing people to rush to their every need. Most last born children are lighthearted, cheerful, and playful. Because parents are usually more relaxed by the time the second child is born, they put less pressure on this child to walk, talk etc… Last born children are more likely than others to be undisciplined in their personal life, procrastinate continually, and are late or always miss appointments. The youngest child often goes through a worry-free childhood and expects good things in life; they usually end up being great optimists. In adulthood, they are often disappointed when they must be independent and life does not go as they hoped. Therefore, the continual attention the youngest receives molds their personality with both strengths and weaknesses.

Only children have the best and worst of all possible worlds: they are perpetually the over-achieving oldest and the pampered youngest in the family. As a result, they have many characteristics of the oldest child, yet may remain childlike in many ways. Because they don’t have to compete for attention with siblings, they tend to be more at ease with themselves and have high self-esteem. In an effort to make their child a creditable representative of their parenting abilities, parents may strictly discipline an only child. They have only one chance at parenting correctly, and expect the child to be “perfect.” As a result of their parents, only children mature early and miss out on being playful and silly. Parents of only children usually set high expectations, similar to parents of oldest children. Often times only children excel in school and become a “teacher’s pet.” Only children usually feel more comfortable around adults than children. Some become overachievers, while others give up completely as they realize they cannot possibly be perfect. Without other children to worry about, parents usually focus all their attention on the only child. Some only children seek relief from all this adult attention. They may withdraw and become overly independent. Some try to do things quickly before the adults can offer advice or criticism. Many only children resent criticism and avoid doing a task a second time if they had been critiqued the first time. Since only children are the main focus of their parents life, they often grow up expecting a lot from life. They usually have a lot growing up, both psychologically and materialistically. In adulthood, they continue their selfish ways. No matter how successful only children are, they may continue to fear failure and dread letting down their parents. Therefore, the parents of only children mold their child’s personality into that of an oldest child and a youngest child.

Researchers have found that not only does birth order effect one’s personality, but it also effects the friends and spouse one chooses. Most people tend to be friends with people who have the same birth order as them. This way people agree on the same issues and have the same expectations and goals. In addition, researchers have come up with a list of compatible partners for marriages based on personality traits. The list includes: a first born husband and a last born wife and a last born husband and a first born wife. The less preferred marriages include: a middle child husband and a last born wife, a last born husband and a middle child wife, an oldest husband and an oldest wife, and a last born husband and a last born wife. Research shows that only children are highly compatible with both first born and last born children, since they share similar characteristics of each. Consequently, the order of one’s birth effects every aspect of their life: their personality, friends, and spouses.

In the twisted minds of men and women who murder again and again, sex, pain, and death are fashioned in to a terrible passion to kill. Otherwise normal individuals, serial killers turn to violence and death in search of power over others and to explore their own monstrous sexual identity. That is what their killing is really about, although it may take many different forms.

Some of these serial killers view women and sometimes men, as mere dolls to be terrorized, murdered, violated, and the dispersed, piece by piece, for wild animals to find. Others, through a perverse psychological chemistry, form a murderous composite identity- but remain relatively harmless on their own. There are those rare predators who, hunting with the cunning savagery of a forest wolf, stalk through the human herd and attack the weakest members: the impaired, the homeless, the young of both sexes.

Such men lead more or less normal lives in parallel to their murderous one. They have parents, fiancйs, spouses, lovers, children, homes, jobs; they enjoy a drink with the boys, they fret about bills, and they aspire to better things- many yearn to become police officers. When apprehend they often reveal a host of reasons for their deadly acts; a tyrannical or missing parent, a prostitute’s scornful laugh, demons murmuring secretly in their minds. They may even exhibit a self-pitying variant of remorse.

While their behavior has been insane, however, they are rarely locked away in mental institutions. To be judged legally insane one can not understand the wrongness or consequences of his crimes. These individuals commit not one, but a series of premeditated murders and then skillfully elude capture. They may indeed be compelled to kill, but they are not insane in the eyes of the law. When society does pick up such predators, their very cunning insures them a life behind bars or a place on death row.

Most serial killers have an extensive history of severe sexual and/or physical abuse and neglect in their childhood that makes them question their masculinity later in life. With this question running through their mind as they are developing sexually and experimenting with it, leaves them a feeling of inadequacy of sexual orientation.

Larry Eyler, a part time painter and store clerk, had a sadistic streak few have matched. Throughout his childhood, he was the battered son of a alcoholic father, he suffered abuse from two stepfathers and was sent by his mother to live with a succession of other families. He was the youngest of four children whose parents divorced when he was still young. Dropping out of high school his senior year, he worked odd jobs for a couple of years before earning his GED.

Sporadic enrollment in college between 1974 and 1978 left him without a degree and he finally made his move to Chicago. Unknown to his friends and relatives, Larry was at war with his own sexuality. Struggling to cope with his homosexual tendencies that both fascinated and repelled him, he would learn to take sex where he could find it, forcefully, and then eliminate the evidence of his shame. This struggle, as with so many others, is emotionally draining and can eventually control one’s life. Mental abuse comes mostly from within their own thoughts and desires.

A classic example of an inadequate personality would be the case of the Son of Sam murders in New York City during the late 1970’s. David Berkowitz was eventually arrested for his series of murders of couples, six murders in all. Berkowitz murdered because of sexual frustration, but he was not a homosexual. He murdered because of his discontent with women. From July 29,1976 to August 10,1977, New York City was held in a reign of terror because of an unknown assailant, calling himself the Son of Sam. He trolled the streets of New York, in search of his victims, with his infamous .44 caliber revolver. Eight related shootings, spanned out over the year, ended with the lives of six and seven others were injured and left with the horrible memories that they will never forget.

As a man, Berkowitz was sexually immature; he would usually masturbate about three times per day. Occasional masturbation is healthy, but when an individual prefers it to sexual intercourse, as Berkowitz did, it is a sign of sexual immaturity. In 1971, he joined the Army saying: “I joined the Army to lose my virginity.”

In the serial killers childhood, they usually have a marked history of delinquent acts as cruelty to animals and or children, destruction of property, setting fires and theft. Rebellion and lying to their authority figures are also other common traits.

As a child, Jeffery Dahmer, the killer of at least eighteen, seemed excessively interested In the makeup of mechanics and the anatomy of animals. Children, as many adults are curious about how things work. Jeff’s parents never really questioned this because his father was one that believed in in the experimentation and discovery way of learning. Unfortunately, Jeff’s interest progressed from merely dismembering “road kill” to actually trapping and mutilating the neighborhood pets. The theft of family pets eventually bored him . It was time to move on to bigger and better things, like humans.

For whatever reason, in approximately fifty percent of the families of future serial killers, the biological fathers had left before the child was twelve years of age. Of course the argument here is that fifty percent come from stable homes, or at least, full households…but why? The lack of a father figure at this point of their lives leaves them to take the roles of a “father” to help support, sometimes financially, the mother and the other children. This also gives them the opportunity to express their feelings more openly and freely, with little or no parental interference. Having an opening to do such things leads them to believe that they can not get in any trouble for what they are doing. Setting fires, being cruel to other children and animals and other delinquent acts are freely acted upon.

The story of Henry Lee Lucas tells a tale of a fatherless childhood and the lack of parental supervision. The lone parent abusing him every chance that she got, may have contributed to his rampage that left up to several hundred dead in twenty-six states. Born to a prostitute in 1936, he was frequently starved and beaten. The only male or father figure that he knew was his stepfather, a drunken railroad worker who lost both legs in a accident. He died of pneumonia after passing out in the winter snow when Henry was thirteen. With the loss of a father, Henry was left to grow and learn from his mother, an obviously inadequate parent. Lucas’ mother who made him wear dresses and grow his hair long, girl fashioned- once knocked unconscious when he disobeyed. According to Lucas she also made him watch her with her clients.

When looking at this so called “Terrible Triad”, we find the combination of potential warning signs in youths, consisting of bed wetting, sadistic abuse of animals and other children and setting fires. We notice that nearly all of the serial killers experience one or more of the “triad” symptoms and several experience all of these throughout their early life.

Alton Coleman was born in November 1955, the third of five children. His mother was a prostitute in Illinois and was raised by his maternal grandmother, who ignored him. The neighborhood children called him “Pissy” because he constantly wet his clothing. In his teens Coleman joined street gangs, engaged in petty crimes- including theft, assault, killings of neighborhood animals and arson, and was eventually arrested on assault and rape charges. In 1974 he was convicted of the robbery, and kidnap and rape of an elderly woman. Plea-bargaining got him two to four years in prison, where he was also accused of molesting other inmates. In 1984, he began a five state, three month long spree consisting of kidnapping, car theft, rape and murder. After ten deaths, six rapes and several robberies and beatings, he was arrested and eventually received six death sentences as well as 140 years for the kidnapping and child molestation charges.

As we can see, there are many underlying causes of what may make a common person convert into a cold blooded killer. No one for sure can pin point any particular trait or set of traits that will let authorities know before hand to stop that person before he gets the chance to do his damage on society.

Theodore Robert Bundy is the epitome of a serial killer, exhibiting several of the mentioned traits throughout his childhood, life and crimes. Ted, as he was called, was born on November 24,1946, to an unwed mother (Louise Crowell) in Burlington, Vermont. Shortly after his birth the young mother traveled to Philadelphia and left little Ted with strangers while she and her parents debated as to putting him to adoption. After about two months, she decided to keep the baby boy and reclaimed him and returned home to Pennsylvania.

To this day, no one really knows who his real father was. All that is known that he was a member of the armed forces. One half of is genetic makeup was and still remains unknown. Could this be the missing piece of what turned Bundy into a killer? It could very well be.

On May19,1951, in another traumatic experience, Ted acquired both a stepfather and a new name over the course of one day. Louise married John Culpepper Bundy. The boy was not yet five years old. Along with his good grades in school were letters asking him to control his violent temper from his teachers. Several of these letters were with pleas for his guardians to help him do so.

The need to acquire things, to take things that he could not afford, became a Bundy trademark later in life. He brought nothing home but shoplifting items that were far beyond his families’ means. He would explain them away as being gifts from the department store where he worked part time or that they were simply borrowed from friends.

The lack of social interaction, including the lack of, was a note worthy point to his friends. “ He was attractive, and well dressed, exceptionally mannered,” recalls a female classmate. “ I know that he must of dated, but I don’t remember ever seeing him with a date.” In fact Ted only had one date in all of his high school years.

As he grew, Ted’s underlying urges riddled his every thought. In 1972, he graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in psychology. He was a bright student awaiting entrance into the University of Utah at the time the killings began. In January of 1974, a University of Washington coed did not show up for breakfast one morning and her roommates assumed that she decided to sleep late. Deciding to check up on her midmorning, they got no response to knocks at her door. This is where it all began for Ted Bundy and we all know where it eventually wound up. Ted was executed in the electric chair in the state of Florida on January 24,1989.

Who are these people? How do we pick them out of a crowd? We can’t do that. This is why society is having trouble coping with the idea that there are such people out there on the streets as we speak. Murder happens everyday, to a variety of people… but the authorities only know a small percentage of these serial killers. The serial killer becomes more cunning and arrogant with each generation. Some may never be caught and some may never even start killing, but society does have a real worry in their hands the day they all come out and play.
