Research Proposal on HIV/AIDS

Research Proposal on HIV and AIDS

From the time I was old enough to read and comprehend my parents has made me aware of AIDS and HIV. Ten years ago two of my uncles were diagnosed with HIV. Seven years ago my Uncle Ricky died from AIDS. Five years ago my Uncle Ronald died from HIV. Eleven years ago my cousin Brianna was born, four days ago Brianna died from AIDS. Two of my uncles, one of my aunts, three cousins, and many friends have been infected with HIV and AIDS. Some of them have passed away and went on to be in heaven. Many of my family and friends are suffering right now today with HIV and AIDS. For five years I watched my aunt and uncle suffer with the virus. Months went by years went by, my family and I could not figure out how long would it be before a cure would be discovered for this wicked virus.

Well twenty years have gone by, since the disease was recognized in the United States and no cure was ever discovered to take the disease off the earth. No cure has been found but there are some powerful antibiotics and other sorts of medication to help people with the virus to have a longer life span than twenty years ago, when the virus first got recognition in the United States. Today, there are not only ways of treating the disease but there are ways to prevent the disease from spreading around the world.

Although no cure for AIDS has been discovered, citizens of the world must take precautions to prevent the disease from spreading around the world. Today millions of people are dying from AIDS. But the disease can be prevented by awareness as said by the author Van Vugt who wrote the book AIDS Prevention and Services. Millions of dollars are spent each year on research for a cure for AIDS and to make people aware of the disease. To prevent HIV or AIDS first make yourself aware of the disease.

Also safe sex is a key to preventing AIDS but the number one prevention is abstinence. If you are having sex, safety is first, use condoms. Condoms are 99% safe and effective (Center for Disease Control). Last but not least, intervenes drug users must use clean needles. Intervenes drug users can not share needles. Sharing needles put a person at a greater risk of contacting the virus than unprotected sex, as said in AIDS and Public Policy Journal.

There is no cure for HIV or AIDS but there is help. The National HIV Testing Day campaign educates and encourages the public to receive HIV counseling and take the HIV antibody test with the help of local hospitals in urban areas. Estimates indicate that over 200,000 of the 650,000 to 900,000 Americans infected with HIV are unaware they have the virus. There are advantages to knowing your HIV Status - whether you are HIV Negative (HIV-) or HIV Positive (HIV+). You can prevent infection to others if you find you are HIV positive. You can seek medical therapy early. The only way to tell if you have been infected with HIV is by taking an HIV antibody blood test. There is also a new HIV oral test that is as accurate as blood testing but uses saliva rather than blood. Additionally some test sites may offer the latest breakthrough in HIV tests that can be performed using a urine sample (DiVittis).

Testing could be confidential or anonymous. Confidential means that a confidential medical record is kept of your test and the results and cannot be shared without your permission or a court order. Anonymous testing means that you receive the results of the test but no medical record is kept. The test detects antibodies to HIV in the blood. A positive test result means that you have been infected with HIV and that your body has begun producing these antibodies.

These antibodies usually appear in your system 3 to 6 months after HIV infection occurs. If you have engaged in high-risk activity you should wait for 3 months to pass before testing. When you test, if you test negative, you should wait an additional 3-6 months and re-test to be certain of your HIV status. Testing can be done through a testing site, doctor's office, a clinic, or in the privacy of your own home through home testing kits (Auerbach).

A negative HIV test is not reliable unless the person was tested at least six months after he or she had engaged in any unsafe activity. One unprotected encounter with an infected person is enough to transmit the virus. People who test positive now have several options available to them. Because there are new treatments designed to fight the virus, boost the immune system, and ward off opportunistic infections before they develop. The earlier you know your status and seek medical treatment the better (Auerbach). In conclusion, if you take precautions with your life and have self awareness you can help prevent the spread of HIV and AIDS.
