Persuasive Essay on Uniforms

Persuasive Essay on School Uniforms

Imagine yourself back in high school. What was it that made you stand apart from everyone else. Or in other words, what is it that made you an individual? For most of us the way we dressed set us apart, especially if it reflected our religion, race, culture, or sexual orientation. But it seems that across the nation dress codes and uniforms are the controversial issue that is running through school districts. Educators feel that it will equal status among students and not put down kids for their clothes. Also they believe its cheap to afford and easy to know what to wear the next day for school. I think those in favor of uniforms aren’t looking at the big picture.

As our nation is growing more diverse by the minute and schools are trying to have students accept and understand diversity in our society, the idea of having school uniforms only emphasizes conformity. Many who oppose uniforms also say that those students are only being deprived of the opportunity to make choices and set limits for themselves. I also believe that young people should be able to pick out their clothes. Not only does it get them prepared for adulthood, but also gives them a sense of maturity.

This may not seem like much, but in the eyes of a young adult, it only makes them feel like they are being trusted on making their own decisions.

Another reason why school uniforms are being pushed throughout high schools is to equalize status. To me, school uniforms do no equalize status in schools, especially high schools. You’re going to know who is rich and who is not by the jewelry, shoes, car they drive, or accessories a students wears. No matter what schools try to do to control violence, students are always going to have some idea or reason to pick on someone for their status. Plus, when you try to make students or anyone else conform in one area, they will only make it up somewhere else.

Finally, uniforms can be a financial burden on families. School uniforms plus ‘regular clothing’ for activities outside of school can leave families broke. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) have argued that many parents cannot afford to buy school uniforms. So what happens if families cannot afford these uniforms and there is a mandatory policy? Well, they will have to borrow money from friends or family members.

There is no need for families to do things like that, especially if it’s just for uniforms.

Students should not have to be penalized for not being able to afford uniforms.

In the end, school uniforms may only cause more students to be rebellious and more negative towards school itself. Many students see it as obeying rules over thinking for themselves. At this age looking at it this way only makes them feel like they are incapable of doing things on their own like picking out their own clothes.

School uniforms policies also emphasize sameness at a time when schools are trying to celebrate diversity. It’s like the school is teaching it, but will not let it show throughout the school with its students. Also for the most part, school uniforms can deprive students of their education simply because their families cannot afford or abide by the uniform policy.
