My Career Choice Essay
Choosing a career its tough business. There are so many choices, so many different aspects to consider. Money, the job setting, and how a specific job will affect family life. Growing up I thought about many different options, such as being a professional, specifically a pediatrician, becoming a track star, and owning my own restaurant show the different extremes I have thought about. For the time being though I am fairly certain on my current decision to major in childhood education and become a grade school teacher. In the future, I also hope to one day own my own place, either a preschool or gradeschool.
Becoming a grade school teacher has always had an appeal to me. When I was in 2nd grade I would watch my teacher, Mrs. Brooks, sitting at her desk grading papers and think to myself “I would like to do that someday”. I’m not sure what it was about this action that attracted me. Perhaps it had to do more to do with the teacher herself, who had a lasting impression on me. Mrs. Brooks had that quality that is vital in every childhood teacher; she had the ability to connect with her student and to communicate with them in a childlike way. Instead of being a feared authoritative figure, she was a comforting mom, respected because she commanded respect yet loved because she gave love. These wonderful qualities first stirred in me the desire to be a teacher when I was 8 years old. Even then, on some level, I was able to understand the power a teacher has in a child’s life. A student is in school for about 7 hours a day, 5 days a week about 35 hours a week. That’s more time then many parents are able to spend with their children in a full week at home.
So school experience must have a major impact in a child’s life. One bad teacher can cause such pain during those long hours. On the flip side, a caring teacher can bring laughter and happiness. Many homes are not warm, loving environments. The right teacher can make school a safe haven, as it should be, where children can come to learn and play. Nothing else could give me greater satisfaction then to help create that.
Another perk of being in the teaching profession is the hours. I want a family, and getting off work at 3 would let me spend extra time with my family. Helping my children with their homework, driving them to meetings and practices, and just cooking dinner are activities that have great benefits. Many families today are almost estranged yet living together, with staggered schedules and little together time. Wives and husbands barely see each other, and kids are often more or less raised by their nannies and the TV I want to avoid this if at all feasibly possible, and spend as much time involved in my family’s lives as I can. I do not want to work around the clock; I want to be an active part in my child’s daily life and upbringing. Being a part of each other’s lives is a major factor in keeping a family close-knit and strong. Having summer’s off provides an outlet many jobs do not, to recuperate and relax, and take long vacations together. I want to see the world, Europe, Africa, Australia, all of it, and with summer’s free this will be possible.
The only problem with my career choice is the financial aspect. Unfortunately, I can’t see myself being content with a teacher’s salary. In NYC, public school teachers start somewhere around $35,000a year. That would never be enough to satisfy me, especially if I want to do all the aforementioned traveling. So after some years of teaching, when my children are a little older, I hope to open up a school of my own. Whether that school will be more of a day-care or a pre-school I have yet to determine. However being my own boss is a definite goal. Running my own place will give me some sort of control over how much money I make. Instead of having a set salary, my talents, creativity, and shrewdness will have some affect on my income. I truly believe if I work my hardest, make smart investments, and put to full use my business skills and knowledge of children, I can become a successful businesswomen. My years of previous experience teaching will only add to by ability create a safe, fun, learning environment for children. However, there are disadvantages to owning my own place. Responsibility for the upkeep and running of my business will lie solely on my shoulders. It’s much harder to vacation and travel while owning your own place. Also, work doesn’t just stay at the office. Much of it comes home. Bills, hiring workers/teachers, and the general management are all new responsibilities that don’t have to be dealt with working for a public school. Running a school also separates you somewhat from the children. Most principals have limited teaching time, and are not in charge of their own class. Hopefully I will be able to own my own place and still teach.
My school will be a private Christian institution. God is a major force in my life, and instilling godly values in children would be a top priority. Every day will start with a prayer, and before every meal God will be thanked. Incorporating my career and my faith is my ultimate goal.
When I was 13 I started helping with the children’s group at my church. When I was 18 I started helping with the youth group. I learned how to organize trips, and run meetings. I know the importance of incorporating God with education. I loved working especially with the younger children because they are like sponges, sucking up everything they are taught.
As of now, my main focus remains on graduating from college. After that, I’ll become a teacher and then open up a school of my own. As a teacher I can only hope to emulate Mrs. Brooks, and be a caring and loving figure in a child’s life. Teachers can have a major effect on a child’s life. A single teacher can destroy a child’s confidence, or build their self-esteem. The experience of teaching and caring for a child that needs love is its own reward.
