Geosystem Essay

Geosystem Essay

This year the “geosystem” started with a spark and has ended with an explosion that has been heard, and seen worldwide. Previous recorded records that date back as much as two hundred years (the recent fires in the California mountains) have been broken all within a twelve month span, with most of the events taking place in the past three to four months.

On September 1st of 2003, the United States was hit by torrential floods that poured from the mid west all the way to the east coast. This storm was created by a front that joined with moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, which resulted in major flooding.

This storm broke a one hundred and eight year record. And to make things worse, just when the rain seemed to subside, the world was hit by numerous hurricanes that rocked and shook it by its feet. Hurricane Fabian and hurricane Isabel are two of the storms that caused severe damage across the world abroad. Fabian, with winds that reached one hundred and twenty miles an hour, hit Bermuda with such force that it was declared the worst hurricane to hit there in the past fifty years. Isabel just a few days later unleashed her power on the Bahamas and recorded winds of one hundred and sixty miles an hour. Both of the storms created horrific damage to the area hit.

Southern California experienced a different type of weather pattern in September of this year. An actual tornado touched down in twentynine palms and caused significant damage. In Northern California on that same day, a 4.1 earthquake hit the Bay Area.

Then a month later California’s dry hills and mountains caught a spark and went up in flames. “Fires stretched from Ventura county all the way down to the border of Mexico, resulting in the worst fire season in California history,” Brian Neilson of the Los Angeles County Fire Department said. Thousands of acres burned the California terrain for two straight weeks until some containment was made.

Earthquakes all over the world were recorded this year. A major 6.6 rocked southwest China in November, causing major damage to surrounding cities. Another quake that registered 6.2 hit Samoa pretty hard in mid September, and a total of nine 3.0 quakes or larger stuck the west in the month of November. Along with earthquakes came volcano eruptions this year. Eruptions in Indonesia, Costa Rica and Mexico took place, with Mexico’s “volcano of fire” producing quite a show this year.

From tropical cyclones flooding areas of China to California, Hurricanes rocking the tides, major earthquakes shaking the world, volcanoes erupting, and fires sweeping across of the state of California, this year’s geosystem experienced a hard bite from “mother earths” mouth.
