Essay on the Vatican
I have always been interested in the Vatican and its teachings for as long as I can remember. This past interest, however, recently flourished as I was given the opportunity to select the website www.vatican.va for this assignment. I was searching for a refresher on Vatican and its current mission facing the church and the world. When this site popped up on my computer screen, however, the first thing that I noticed was a tan background with stain glass photos and the words “Holy Father”. Upon seeing the meticulous care and attention that the Vatican gave to their website I knew I was in for a treat.
Immediately the words I associated with the website were church and religion. The format of the page was also equally important as it was available in numerous languages. The main topics were in the center of the page and characterized with symbols, such as the bible, a cross etc.. Off to the right I noticed the word focus and four main topics underneath one of them being mother Teresa and her sainthood. Above the word focus I saw a search bar; this is a great tool to have in your web site. The search bar helps users search for exactly what they are looking for with out have to search threw each topic in the site. The home page also contained a site map which is another time saver for users. The site map highlights all the main topics that are highlighted in the sites.
After reviewing the homepage I began to explore the web site. I searched some of the main topics. I noticed that all the pages have the same format, the title is in bold at the top of the page followed by a description or more sub topics. While searching these topics I found the information to be very relevant. When searching I learned about the Vatican art, that the Vatican has a museum, and I also learn of many different saints and their respected celebration dates. The part that really piqued my curiosity was the section given to the Vatican Secret Archives. Upon following the link it brought to a new world of secret documents that would be never be available to me if I was living during the administration of any of the previous Popes.
Upon viewing the educational site I found the information to be very enlightening. Before reviewing this site I never appreciated how important the papal perspective is to the current issues facing the world. It provides an important and refreshing perspicuous on socio economic problems in addition to some old ones. In conclusion, I have a new appreciation for the Vatican and its continuing message for world peace.
